TIP-OFF
Delta State men's basketball is coming off a two-game losing streak at home, the first time the Statesmen have lost two in a row this season. It's also the first time the team has lost at home since Jan. 31, 2015 against Christian Brothers, snapping a 10-game home winning streak.

A grueling road trip is ahead for the Green-and-White, as they face the Union Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan. 28 and the Bucs of Christian Brothers on Saturday, Jan. 30.

In the first meeting with Union, DSU defeated the Bulldogs on Dec. 13, 71-69. Devin Schmidt led all scorers with 24 points, followed by PJ Davis with 12 and James Kilpatrick with 11. UU's Marterrace Brock led four Bulldogs in double-figures with 15 points.

Delta State also defeated CBU on Dec. 10 at home, 74-71. Schmidt led all scorers with 30 points, while Kilpatrick added 11. Christian Brothers sophomore guard Cody Garbuzinski led four Bucs in double-figures with 17 points.

Schmidt, a 6-foot-4 junior, averages 24.6 points per game to rank sixth in NCAA Div. II and second in the Gulf South Conference. As a junior, he ranks second in Div. II and fifth in Div. I and II. Over the weekend, Schmidt moved into third place on the all-time scoring list at Delta State. He now has 1,579 career points after passing DSU Hall of Famer Twentis Magee with 1,569 and needs to average 24.4 points per game the rest of the season to break the scoring record during the regular season.

As a team, the Statesmen rank first in several categories in the league: scoring defense (68.1 ppg), field goal percentage defense (41.0%), free throw percentage (75.0%), offensive rebounds (39.8 rpg) and defensive rebounds (32.5).

Two veterans of men's basketball will face off on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Coach Jim Boone and CBU head coach Mike Nienaber. The duo has 63 combined years of coaching experience and 1,869 games coached between the two.
