Madgen and Schmidt Hoist Statesmen Over UAH in Thriller

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Jack Madgen joined the 1,000-point club and Devin Schmidt set a new career-high with 36 points en route to Delta State University's 82-74 thrilling victory on Monday night.

    How It Happened
  • Alabama Huntsville jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the 17:05 mark to open a fast-paced contest.
  • Before the UAH advantage was insurmountable, Delta State tied the game at 6-6 with buckets from Jack Madgen, Devin Schmidt, and Terry Morris, and eventually took a 10-9 lead on a Declan Harrick put back jumper with 14:33 to play in the first half.
  • DSU held the lead until UAH's Kip Owens nailed a 3-pointer at the 5:02 mark to give Huntsville the slim 26-25 advantage.
  • Four lead changes and one tie occurred in the closing minutes, but the Chargers closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Schmidt went on an offensive tirade, scoring nine of DSU's 11 points to start the second half. PJ Davis' jumper with 16:04 on the clock tied the game 40-40.
  • The Statesmen regained the lead for the first time since the first half when Schmidt drained two free throws, notching the score at 48-46 with 10:42 to play.
  • Two old-fashioned three-point plays from Davis and Zelvin Smith in consecutive trips down the court extended the DSU margin to 57-48.
  • The Chargers fought back to regain the lead, 61-60, with 4:54 to play on the game clock.
  • Schmidt drained back-to-back threes to deadlock the game at 66-66 with 1:59 to go, and a pair of made free throws from Smith notched the score at 68-66 in favor of DSU at the 1:27 mark.
  • Huntsville tied the game for the eighth time of the night at the 1:05 mark. A last-second 3-pointer from Schmidt did not fall, forcing overtime with the score deadlocked at 68-68.
  • UAH went up by four to start overtime, but Delta State mounted a ferocious comeback led by free throws and 3-pointers from Madgen and Schmidt. The Statesmen sparked an 11-0 run to win 82-74 and remain undefeated at home. Schmidt and Madgen scored 12 of DSU's 14 points in overtime.

    Notables
  • Madgen's jumper at the 10:55 mark in the first half allowed him to join the 1,000-point club at Delta State. The senior Aussie has 1,011 career points.
  • Davis and Smith have each scored in double-figures in the last three contests. The duo scored 11 points each against Alabama Huntsville.
  • Schmidt set a new career-high 36 points on 12-of-25 from the field, including 7-of-17 from 3-point land, and 5-of-9 from the charity stripe, producing his 10th 30-point performance of his career with 34. The 6-foot-4 junior now has 1,463 career points to remain sixth on the all-time scoring list.
  • Head Coach Jim Boone needs seven to eclipse 500 career victories.
  • The Green-and-White now share the top spot in the Gulf South Conference.
