TIP-OFF
Statesmen basketball improved to 11-3 on the season and 6-2 in Gulf South Conference play with big wins over North Alabama, 97-74, and ranked Alabama Huntsville, 82-74, in a thrilling matchup of the league's top teams.
The win over the Chargers put Delta State at the top of the conference standings in a three-way tie with UAH and West Georgia.
Junior powerhouse
Devin Schmidt has reached national heights as the sixth leading scorer in NCAA Division II. He also ranks first in the GSC and the South Region. The Sevierville, Tenn., native is the second leading scorer among juniors in DII and fifth in all of NCAA (DI-III). He is also the leading scorer in the state of Mississippi. Schmidt established a new career-high 36 points against Huntsville, recording his 10th 30-point performance in his tenure.
Senior guard
Jack Madgen joined the 1,000-point club in DSU's win over UAH. The 6-foot-5 Williamstown, Australia, native has 1,011 career points, ranking 14th on DSU's all-time scoring list, with the second half of the season still to play. The Statesmen now have two 1,000-point scorers on the roster (Madgen and Schmidt) for the first time since the 1997-98 season that featured Twentis Magee and Chris Sykes, who rank third and fourth, respectively, on the all-time scoring list at Delta State. Madgen's two 3-pointers in overtime against Huntsville lifted Delta State over the Chargers for the win. He was 1-of-5 from downtown in regulation.
Two other returners have stepped up in league play in what is considered one of the toughest conferences in Division II.
PJ Davis and
Zelvin Smith have both put up double-figures in the last three contests. Davis produced a double-double (14 points, 12 boards), while Smith tied his career-high 18 points against North Alabama.
Delta State is ranked No. 25 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and receiving votes in the NABC Poll.
