Lady Statesmen Fall 3-1 to North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Delta State women's soccer team couldn't hold on to an early 1-0 lead at halftime and suffered a 3-1 loss to Gulf South Conference rival, the University of North Alabama at Florence, Ala., on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lakyn Cryder gave Delta State a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the first half scoring off a direct kick from 30 yards out.
  • The Lions came alive in the second half when Kylie Huey scored the equalizer in the 59th minute.  
  • Margarida Sousa gave the Lions the lead in the 71st minute, scoring UNA's second goal on an assist by Shelby Wall.
  • Eleanor Costello scored the final goal of the game less than four minutes later.
  • In goal, Oldacre made seven saves and faced 26 shots from the Lions.
  • Cryder recoreded DSU's only shot on goal, while Sam Naughton and Catherine Thomson each recorded a shot.
  • Huey, Costello and Sousa led the Lions' offense. Huey recorded six shots (three on goal) and scored a goal. Costello had a team-high nine shots, three shots on goal and one goal. Sousa had two shots, one shots on goal and one goal.  
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Despite being outshot 12-2, the Lady Statesmen were able to maintain a 1-0 lead in the first half.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Statesmen are still seeking their first conference win.
  • The loss marks the eighth straight loss for Delta State and 21st consecutive conference loss. The Lady Statesmen have not won a conference game since 2014, when they defeated Union University 2-1.
  • Delta State's scoring offense is fourth in the Gulf South Conference.
  • Delta State is ranked second in the GSC in points per game with 6.15.
  • The Lady Statesmen's 28 goals on the season rank third in the GSC.
  • The 26 shots the Lions fired were the most Delta State has faced all season.
  • Emily Oldacre has made 51 saves this season and ranks sixth in the GSC in saves per game.
  • Cryder scored her first goal of the season.
 
UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen will have a few days of rest before hitting the road to take on Shorter University in Rome, Ga., on Oct. 21. Kickoff will be at 4:00 p.m. CST.
