Lady Statesmen Defeat Shorter 2-1 in Overtime Thriller

ROME, Ga. – The Delta State women's soccer team snapped an eight-game losing streak with a thrilling 2-1 win in overtime against Shorter University in Rome, Ga., on Oct. 21.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sam Naughton dribbled past the defense and scored on a shot from 15 yards out in the seventh minute of the game to give Delta State a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lady Statesmen held on to the 1-0 lead at halftime, forcing five saves on Alden Powell and firing seven shots.
  • The Lady Hawks had only two shots in the first half, but regrouped and tied the game in the 59th minute.
  • Corrie Thomas scored the equalizer for Shorter off a deflection.
  • With the score still deadlocked, the game headed into overtime.
  • Catherine Thomson scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute on a corner kick, handing Delta State the 2-1 victory.  
  • Thomson, Naughton and Lakyn Cryder led the Delta State offense with a combined 11 shots and six shots on goal.  
  • Powell suffered the loss in goal for the Lady Hawks conceding two goals. She made seven saves against nine shots on goal.
  • Thomas and Channel Mosely led Shorter's offense with two shots and one shot on goal apiece.
  • Emily Oldacre faced only three shots on goal from the Lady Hawks and made two saves.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • The three shots on goal for the Lady Hawks were the second lowest the Lady Statesmen defense has faced all season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With the win, the Lady Statesmen earned their first conference win of the season and snapped a 21-game conference losing streak dating back to 2014.
  • Thomson scored her sixth goal of the season. She fired a season high of five shots and now leads the team in shots with 27.
  • Naughton's goal in the first half was her fourth of the season.
  • Anoucke Baas recorded her fifth assist this season and now leads the team in assists. She also holds the second place record for most assists in a season.
  • Delta State's scoring offense is third in the Gulf South Conference.
  • The Lady Statesmen are third in the league in assists per game averaging 1.786.
  • Delta State is ranked third in the GSC in points per game with 6.07.
  • The Lady Statesmen tied the third place record for most goals in a season with 30. Their 30 goals rank third in the GSC.
