Guess Lifts Lady Statesmen Past Spring Hill, 2-1

CLEVELAND, Miss. Taylor Guess' game-winning header in the second half lifted the Lady Statesmen past Spring Hill College, 2-1, on Thursday, Oct. 27 at Delta Field. With the win, Delta State earned its second conference win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Katie Swaine got the Lady Statesmen offense going, scoring on a one-touch pass to the goal in second minute of the game to give DSU an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Badgers had the edge on shots (six) and corners (four), but Delta State held on to the 1-0 lead at halftime.   
  • Aiesha Ledda scored the equalizer in the 57th minute of the game. Her shot from outside the 18-yard box deflected off the crossbar and into the goal to put Spring Hill back in the running.
  • Taylor Guess scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute on a header to hand Delta State its second conference win of the season.
  • Swaine, Guess, and Lakyn Cryder led Delta State's offense, recording nearly half of Delta State's shots and shots on goal.
  • Sydney DeJohn, Lauren Clement, and Ledda led the Badgers in shots and shots on goal.    
  • Emily Oldacre faced 14 shots and made four saves in goal.
  • Badgers' keeper, Hannah Shankman, conceded two goals, made five saves and faced 12 shots.

  • Swaine's goal in the second minute was the quickest goal Delta State has scored all season.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • With the win, the Lady Statesmen recorded their second conference win of the season—the most since 2012.
  • Swaine's goal in the first half was her fifth of the season. She is now second on the team in most goals scored.
  • Guess recorded her fourth goal and third assist of the season.
  • Cryder recorded her third assist of the season.
  • Oldacre improved to 5-8 and tied the second place record for most wins in a season.
  • DSU's scoring offense ranks fourth in the Gulf South Conference.
  • The Lady Statesmen are fifth in the league assists per game averaging 1.668 per contest.
  • DSU ranks fourth in the GSC in points per game with 5.69.
  • The Lady Statesmen broke the third place school record for most goals scored in a season with 32. Their 32 goals rank fourth in the GSC.
 
UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen will host the University of West Florida on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Delta Field for the last match of the season. Senior Day festivities will begin at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday to honor the nine senior members of the squad.
