Blazers Net Game-Winning Goal to Upend Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – A late goal in the second half allowed the Valdosta State University Blazers to defeat the Delta State women's soccer team, 1-0, on Oct. 9, at Delta Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two teams battled it out in what ended up being a goalkeepers' duel.
  • Valdosta State had the first shot on goal in the 13th minute, but the game remained scoreless at the end of the first half.  
  • Valdosta State broke the scoreless draw in the 67th minute. Tessa Bates' header off a corner kick gave the Blazers the game-winning goal.
  • Taylor Guess led the Lady Statesmen offense with six shots and four shots on goal followed by Catherine Thomson, who recorded three shots and two shots on goal.  
  • In goal for the Lady Statesmen, Emily Oldacre made four saves and faced five shots on goal from the Blazers.
  • VSU keeper, Alyssa Curtis, made seven saves and faced 19 shots from the Lady Statesmen.
 
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • The Lady Statesmen had the edge on shots and shots on goal, with 19 and 10 respectively, but all five of Delta State's corner kicks were in the first half. 
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Lady Statesmen have yet to win a game after being down a goal and are still seeking their first GSC win of the season. 
  • The loss marks the seventh straight loss for the Lady Statesmen and 20th consecutive conference loss. The Lady Statesmen have not won a conference game since 2014, when the Lady Statesmen defeated Union University 2-1.
  • The Blazers recorded their first win of the season.
  • Despite the loss, Delta State's scoring offense remains third in the GSC.
  • Delta State is second in the GSC in points per game, averaging 6.50.
  • The Lady Statesmen's 27 goals on the season rank third in the GSC and are tied for 12th nationally.
  • Emily Oldacre has made 44 saves this season. She ranks sixth in the GSC in saves per game.
  • Guess's six shots and four shots on goal were a season high for the senior in a single game. She leads the team in shots with 25 and moves to second on the team in shots on goal with 13.
