Delta State at GSC/SSC Classic |
Delta State closed out its exhibition slate with a 63-78 loss to Southeastern Conference foe Mississippi State University on Nov. 4.
Brett Warner scored a team high 21 points for the Statesmen and recorded four rebounds and two assists in the preseason tune-up.
The Statesmen travel to St. Petersburg, Florida this week for a two-day tournament, the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Classic.
Delta State faces off with Florida Southern College on Friday, Nov. 11 at 12p.m. CDT to open the tournament. DSU and Florida Southern have met six times in the past with the Mocs owning a 4-2 advantage over the Statesmen. Last year, Delta State defeated Florida Southern 77-63 in the classic.
Eckerd College will face the Green-and-White on the second and final day of the tournament, Saturday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. CDT. The Statesmen claimed a victory over the Tritons 87-77 in last season
Devin Schmidt, a senior guard out of Seviereville, Tenn., was selected to the Preseason All-GSC for the third consecutive season. He became DSU's all-time leading scorer, and named All-American, South Region Player of the Year and GSC Player of the Year, after averaging 25.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He was also named Preseason Player of the Year by Division II Bulletin.
Schmidt has scored 1,873 career points (20.4 ppg), is 45.3 percent (632-of-1396) from the floor and 38 percent from three-point range (224-of-590). He needs 696 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer..
The Statesmen will face off with four more non-conference opponents before entering a tough league schedule. Up next, the Green-and-white open their regular season schedule at home against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe LeMoyne-Owen College on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
