Barry Edges Gilbert, Lady Statesmen 52-47

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Senior Aspriona Gilbert tallied 13 points and ripped down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, but it was not enough as Barry University edged out the Lady Statesmen 52-47 at the Gulf South/Sunshine State Crossover held at NSU Arena on the campus of Nova Southeastern University.

How It Happened
 
  • Senior Anissa Jackson got the Lady Statesmen going early on, as her four points got Delta State out to a 9-4 advantage with 5:06 left in the first quarter.
  • The Barry Bucs closed the first quarter on an 8-3 run, leaving both teams knotted at 12 at the end of the opening quarter of action. Sophomore Lauren Seyranian had six first quarter points on a pair of three-point field goals.
  • Delta State and Barry traded buckets in the second quarter, but a pair of free throws from freshman Tori Mallory with 1:09 to go in the second half would put the Lady Statesmen on top at the break 24-22.
  • Sophomore Alondrea Rush and Jackson paced the Lady Statesmen at halftime. Rush tallied nine points, three rebounds and a steal, while Jackson totaled six points, two rebounds and two steals. Senior Kaelin Kneeland added five points and three rebounds for the Lady Statesmen at the break. 
  • Barry's defense put the clamps down on the Lady Statesmen offense, as a Gilbert layup and an Alexis Ross jumper were the only two baskets of the third quarter for DSU. Junior Kiara Palmer was the high scorer of the quarter with four points for the Bucs.
  • Barry outscored the Lady Statesmen 10-4 in the third period, as Seyranian added her third three-point field goal of the afternoon with 1:32 left in the third to give Barry a 34-30 lead heading to the fourth quarter. 
  • A pair of free throws from Gilbert and a pair of free throws from Rush tied the score at 34 apiece with 8:47 left to play in the game. 
  • The Lady Statesmen took a 37-36 lead on a free throw from Gilbert with 6:58 to go in the contest, but a Kiara Palmer layup on the ensuing possession gave Barry a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way. 
  • Seyranian added two more three-point field goals and scored eight points in the final stanza. Her free throws with one second remaining on the clock iced the game away for the Bucs. 
  • Aspriona Gilbert scored seven points in the fourth quarter, but Delta State could not rally in falling at NSU Arena 52-47.

Notables
 
  • The Lady Statesmen won the rebounding battle for the second consecutive game in edging the Bucs 41-40 on the boards, while Barry had 13 assists to DSU's 9.
  • Delta State committed just 8 turnovers for the game while forcing 17 turnovers on defense. 
  • Barry held the Lady Statesmen to 24.6% shooting from the field, but outshot the Bucs from the free throw line 81.3% (13-of-16) to 62.5% (5-of-8).
  • Lauren Sayranian led all scorers with 22 points, including a 6-of-7 clip from three-point territory. Kiara Palmer added 16 points and 10 rebounds in tallying her first double-double of the season. 
  • Gilbert led the way for DSU with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rush stuffed the stat sheet for the Lady Statesmen, as she posted a line of 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals. Jackson was the other double digit scorer for Delta State, as she put up 10 points and had three rebounds and a pair of steals. 
  • Kneeland (five points), Mallory (two points), junior Carly Keller (two points) and senior Alexis Ross (two points) rounded out the scoring for Delta State.

  • The Lady Statesmen open up the 2016-17 home campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 22, against Southern Arkansas University. The game will tip at 5:30 p.m. CT at Walter Sillers Coliseum in Cleveland, Mississippi.
