Lady Statesmen Open Home Season Against Southern Arkansas

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - The Delta State University women's basketball team is set to open up the 2016-17 home season at Walter Sillers Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 5:30 p.m. in a non-conference tilt with the Southern Arkansas University Lady Muleriders.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
 
  • Since the beginning of the 2012 season, the Lady Statesmen are 9-0 in non-conference games played in front of the home crowd at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
  • Delta State also looks to defend the home court, which has been more than kind to the Lady Statesmen. Since the start of the 2008 season, the Lady Statesmen have turned in a record of 100-10 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. 
  • Senior Aspriona Gilbert is off to a fast start this season, as she registered the first double-double of her career with a 13 point, 10 rebound performance against Barry University. Gilbert is averaging 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Lady Statesmen. 
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has also stepped up and contributed in almost every area for Delta State thus far this season. Rush is averaging 10.5 points per game, 2.5 assists per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and 3.5 steals per game. 
  • The Lady Statesmen sported the No 1. defense in NCAA Division II last season, giving up just 50.3 points per game. That mark was also top in the GSC. Delta State is currently 2nd in the GSC in scoring defense, yielding 58.0 points per contest. 
  • The Lady Statesmen were also ranked No. 15 nationally in field goal percentage defense, holding their opponents to a mere 35.5 percent shooting clip. This season, through the first two games, the Lady Statesmen are holding opponents to 39.6 percent shooting from the field.

    About the Competition
 
  • Southern Arkansas University, led by second year coach Julio Pacheco, is off to a 1-2 start one year removed from a 19-9 season. The Lady Muleriders are scoring 58.7 points per game and are pulling down 47.3 rebounds a night. SAU has already played two conference games in the Great American Conference thus far this year and carry a 1-2 overall record into Tuesday's tilt with the Lady Statesmen.
  • Junior Anna Djedjemel, from Castellanza, Italy, has done a little bit of everything for the Lady Muleriders this season. Djedjemel is second on the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) and leads the team in minutes per game (32.0), assists (4.0 per game), steals (1.7 per game), defensive rebounds per game (5.0), field goals made (12) and field goals attempted (30). 
  • Other Southern Arkansas notables include junior Demi Read, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 11.7 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game, and freshman Kimberly Crown, who is averaging 9.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds while shooting 52.4 percent from the floor.
