Statesmen Fall On The Road Against MSU 78-63

STARKVILLE, Mississippi – Delta State University's men's basketball team fell to Mississippi State University 78-63 in an exhibition contest on Friday night at Humphrey Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • Brett Warner opened scoring for the Statesmen with a 3-pointer, but Mississippi State were quick to get on the board after a lay-up.
  • Both offenses were back-and-forth early in the first half with Dietrich Taylor, Devin Schmidt and Warner making an impact.
  • The Bulldogs gained momentum at the midway mark of the first half by extending the score 17-11.
  • At the 7:39 mark PJ Davis hit a jumper to close the gap making it 22-27.
  • At halftime, the Bulldogs maintained the lead over the Statesmen 43-32 as they headed into the locker room.
  • Both offenses were slow to start the second half, but MSU scored seven points early on while DSU only scored three.
  • The Statesmen began to slowly chip away at the lead but never got closer than five points.
  • The Bulldogs held on to the advantage through to the final buzzer, taking the victory 78-63.
  • A sophomore guard out of Collierville, Tennessee, Warner led all scorers with 21 points. Schmidt and James Kilpatrick led the team with five rebounds apiece. Schmidt also led the team with six assists.
Notables
  • DSU returners, Schmidt, Kilpatrick and Davis, combined for 24 out of the total 63 points in their first exhibition of the season.
  • The other 39 points came from a combination of Warner, John Cornish, Jaden Weldon and Dietrich Taylor.
  • MSU earned the advantage in rebounds 48-33, while Delta State held the edge in turnovers with 19-to-16.
Game Changer
  • MSU used eight baskets from downtown (8-of-28) to the Statesmen 10-for-23 to create the margin of victory.
 
Who's Next
  • The Green-and-White will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. to face Florida Southern College on Friday, Nov. 11 and then Eckerd College on Saturday, Nov. 12 in the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Classic. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
