Statesmen Knock Off Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. – The Delta State University men's basketball team held Mississippi College to just 32 percent shooting in a 68-58 Gulf South Conference victory on Thursday night at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

How It Happened
  • Senior Devin Schmidt got Delta State rolling on offense with a layup to start the first half.
  • Both offenses were back-and-forth early in the first half. Mississippi College hit a jumper and three-pointer to take an early 5-2 lead.
  • DSU reclaimed the lead after two free throws from PJ Davis at the 14:26 mark.
  • The Choctaws continued their scoring going on 8-0 run just before the eight-minute mark.
  • A dunk by Dietrich Taylor and two free throws by Schmidt closed the gap to 10 points, making the score 27-17.
  • Delta State went on a 12-6 run to end the first half with important baskets from Schmidt and Brett Warner.
  • The Choctaws led the Statesmen 33-29 as both teams went into the locker room.
  • Schmidt led DSU with 16 points while Warner recorded five points while Davis Taylor and Cedric Harper scored two apiece in the opening half. Antonio Johnson led MC with 20 first half points. DSU collected 23 first half boards, while MC collected 18.
  • DSU shot 32 percent (8-of-25) from the floor in the first half, including 11-for-15 from the free throw line.
  • MC was 11-for-30 (37 percent) from the floor and 6-for-15 beyond the arc in the opening half.

  • The Statesmen finished 21-of-55 (38 percent) including 23-of-31 from the free throw line, while Mississippi College was just 19-of-59 (32 percent) from the field.
  • Schmidt led DSU with 27 points, while Warner finished with 14 and Davis with 12. Kilpatrick scored eight and led the team with 10 boards and five assists. PJ Davis nearly collected a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds. Johnson led MC with 26 points and three rebounds.

  • DSU claimed its conference opener after falling 87-84 at West Georgia last season.
