Lady Statesmen Slip Past Miles In Overtime

FAIRFIELD, Ala. – Delta State sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush nailed a 3-point field goal with time running down in regulation to force overtime, and the Lady Statesmen fought off the Miles College Golden Bears in the extra frame at Know-Windham Gymnasium en route to a 59-54 victory.

How It Happened:
  • The Lady Statesmen were held scoreless for the first 2:15 of the game before Alondrea Rush's three-point field goal put Delta State on the board. 
  • The Golden Bears opened the first quarter on a 9-3 run, with Javonne Brown leading the way with three early points. 
  • DSU scored just six points over the final 5:44 of the first stanza, with Aspriona Gilbert leading the charge with four points. 
  • Trailing 12-9 heading into the second quarter, the Golden Bears built a 16-11 lead before Carly Keller's three-pointer pulled the Lady Statesmen within one possession. 
  • Another Keller three-point basket put DSU up 19-18 with 3:10 to go in the first half, which proved to be the last score of the half, as both sides went scoreless the rest of the half. 
  • Miles built a nine point lead for most of the third quarter, but an Ieysha Mays layup with 41 seconds left in the third quarter pulled Delta State within seven points heading into the final period. 
  • The Lady Statesmen outscored Miles 16-9 in the fourth quarter, including 10 points from senior Anissa Jackson
  • Trailing by three with just seconds to play, Alondrea Rush nailed a three-point bucket to tie things up at 43-43 and send the game to overtime. 
  • Six overtime points from Aspriona Gilbert helped the Lady Statesmen stave off the Golden Bears, and a pair of free throws from Rush with 13 seconds to play iced the game away. 
  • Three Lady Statesmen scored in double figures, led by Jackson's 14 points and five rebounds. Gilbert added 12 points in a perfect 3-for-3 effort from the field, and Rush added 10 points and dished out three assists. 
  • DSU finished 20-of-43 (46.5 percent) from the floor, including 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) in the second half of action. The Lady Statesmen also shot 4-for-10 (40 percent) from the three point line. Delta State shot 15-for-18 from the free throw line, an 83.3 percent clip. 
  • The Golden Bears were 14-of-48 (29.2 percent) from the field, and went 26-for-40 from the free throw line to finish at 65%. 
  • Miles was led by Victoria Sutton's 13 points and Javonne Brown's 11 points on the contest. 
 
Notables:            
  • The Lady Statesmen have out-rebounded five of their six opponents so far on the season. 
  • Delta State nabbed their 3rd non-conference victory of the campaign, while also picking up their first road victory. 

Who's Next:
  • Delta State plunges right back into conference action, traveling to Shorter University and Lee University before the Christmas holiday. The Lady Statesmen will face off against Shorter on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. and then take on Lee on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m.
