GAME NOTES: |
Delta State at Shorter / Lee |
Delta State University men's basketball team is currently on a three-game win streak as they enter Gulf South Conference play on the road.
DSU picked up wins against Mississippi College, Central Baptist College and Bethel University (Tenn.) to improve to 6-1 on the season.
The series with Shorter started in 2013 with Shorter taking the inaugural 63-53 win at Winthrop-King Centre. Thursday's matchup is the ninth meeting all-time and fourth in Rome, Ga. The Hawks home court has proven to be a tough environment early in this series to overcome, as DSU posts a 1-2 record overall at Shorter.
Lee's matchup on Saturday, Dec. 17 marks the sixth meeting between the two schools, one of the earliest series in the GSC. The first meeting occurred on Jan. 9, 2014 and saw Delta State win 67-56 at Paul Dana Walker Arena.
Senior guard
Devin Schmidt was selected to the Preseason All-GSC for the third consecutive season. He became DSU's all-time leading scorer, and named All-American, South Region Player of the Year and GSC Player of the Year, after averaging 25.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game last season. He was also named Preseason Player of the Year by Division II Bulletin.
Schmidt has scored 2,044 career points (20.6 ppg), is 44.4 percent (686-of-1546) from the floor and 37.3 percent from three-point range (244-of-655). He needs 525 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
The newcomers have adjusted quickly and are making an impact on the floor. Among those,
Cedric Harper is averaging 7.4 points and 7.3 boards per game.
Up next, the Green-and-White return home to face Union University in a conference matchup on Dec. 31. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
