After falling to Arkansas Monticello, the Statesmen have claimed back-to-back contests, including a 77-66 win against Central Baptist College and a 68-58 road victory over in-state rival Mississippi College to open conference play.
Devin Schmidt, a senior guard out of Seviereville, Tenn., was named Preseason All-Gulf South Conference for the third consecutive season. He became DSU's all-time leading scorer, and was named All-American, South Region Player of the Year and GSC Player of the Year, after averaging 25.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game last season. He was also named Preseason Player of the Year by Division II Bulletin.
Schmidt has scored 2,026 career points (20.7 ppg), is 44.5 percent (679-of-1525) from the floor and 37.4 percent from three-point range (242-of-647). He needs 543 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
The newcomers have adjusted quickly and are making an impact on the floor. Among those,
Cedric Harper is averaging 8.3 points and leading the team in rebounds with 8.0 per game.
