Lady Statesmen Tripped By UAH

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Josi Saunders scored 15 points to lead Alabama Huntsville  (12-10, 9-9 GSC) to a 57-52 win over Delta State University (16-5, 13-5 GSC) on Thursday at Spragins Hall. Senior Chelsey Rhodes scored 21 points to lead the Lady Statesmen and move into a tie for eighth on DSU's career scoring list with 1,615 points.

How It Happened
  • Becca Rucks scored the first four points of the game to stake the Lady Statesmen to a 4-0 lead.
  • UAH used a 10-2 run build a 10-6 lead following a Chandler Elder 3-point play with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
  • Chelsey Rhodes tied the game, 11-11, with 1:39 left but UAH regained a 14-11 lead on an Elder 3-pointer at the 1:05 mark.
  • Kaelin Kneeland's layup cut the deficit to 14-13 heading to the second quarter.
  • Trailing 21-18, Rhodes made two free throws with 4:07 left and then a jumper to give DSU a 22-21 lead with 3:30 to play in the second quarter.
  • Dina Saunders' layup capped a 7-0 run with 23 seconds left to give UAH a 28-22 lead at halftime.
  • UAH built a 39-29 lead in the third quarter before the Lady Statesmen went on a 12-2 run, cutting the lead to 41-40 on an Anissa Jackson free throw with 51 seconds left.

  • The Lady Statesmen climbed within four points three times with the final time coming when Antoinette Riddle cut the lead to 55-50 at the 3:04 mark.
  • A Dina Saunders' bucket pushed the lead back to 57-50 before Rhodes scored with three seconds left to close out the scoring.

  • Rhodes's 21 points moved the senior into a tie for eighth with Carla Holder (1981-84/1,615 pts.) for eighth on the all-time scoring list.
