Statesmen Basketball Falls in 81-80 Overtime Decision at UNA

FLORENCE, Alabama – Delta State University men's basketball suffered its second straight loss to North Alabama in an 81-80 overtime decision on Saturday afternoon. Devin Schmidt's 34 points marked his eighth 30-plus point game of the season.

    How It Happened
  • Jack Madgen opened scoring with the first two baskets of the game, a jumper and a three, to give Delta State the 5-0 edge 1:30 into the contest.
  • The Statesmen maintained the lead until the 12:08 mark when the Lions took over possession of the lead and never relinquished it through regulation.
  • North Alabama took a 38-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
  • Devin Schmidt's old-fashioned 3-point play six minutes into the second half put DSU within four, 38-34.
  • Over the next 2:36, UNA's lead ranged from two to five until the Lions began to gain momentum.
  • North Alabama went back up by eight, 63-55, with 3:06 left on the game clock.
  • By the 1:05 mark, the Green-and-White had cut the deficit in half, 63-59, on a James Kilpatrick layup.
  • Delta State went on a 6-0 run over the final 1:02 of regulation to tie the game at 65-65. A last-second shot by UNA's Tavaras Tolliver did not fall, forcing regulation.
  • The Statesmen gained its first lead since the first half just 19 seconds into overtime, 67-65, courtesy of a Madgen layup.
  • Two lead changes and a tie occurred over the next four minutes, but Delta State held the 76-74 edge with 28 seconds left.
  • UNA's Jeff Hodge drained a 3-pointer with 21 seconds on the clock to set the score at 78-77, DSU still with the lead.
  • A pair of John Fletcher free throws with five seconds remaining notched the game at 81-80 in favor of the Lions. That coupled with a Hodge steal sealed the overtime win for North Alabama.

    Notables
  • Schmidt led all scorers as the only player to put up more than 20 points. He had 34, marking his eighth 30-plus point game this season. Four more Statesmen scored in double figures: Zelvin Smith (12), Kilpatrick (11), PJ Davis (10) and Madgen (10).
  • A junior guard, Schmidt now has 1,733 career points to remain in third place on the all-time scoring list at DSU. He needs 67 points to take over as the all-time scoring leader at Delta State with four guaranteed games left.
  • DSU is now 14-24 all-time at Flowers Hall.
     
Game Changer
  • North Alabama shot 78.1 percent (25-of-32) from the free throw line compared to Delta State's 56.5 percent (13-of-23). DSU missed four free throws in overtime.

  • Delta State returns home for its last regular season home games against Shorter and Lee. The Statesmen take on the Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and the Flames on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
