TIP-OFF
After a two-game road skid which included two losses at Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama, Delta State is tied for fourth in the Gulf South Conference with Union and Valdosta and three games left in the regular season.
In their first meeting, the Statesmen and Hawks battled it out in Rome, Ga., on Jan. 11 to see Shorter take the 83-80 victory. SU's Phil Taylor led all scorers, while sophomore
PJ Davis led the Green-and-White with 22 points. The Hawks scored 20 points off of 13 DSU turnovers. Taylor leads the league in scoring with 26.4 points per game.
Delta State started that road trip with a 72-68 win over Lee on Jan. 9. Junior
Devin Schmidt led all scorers with 31 points, while Davis added 15. LU's Chase Cullen led three Flames in double figures with 23 points.
Schmidt, a 6-foot-4 guard, was named to Small College Basketball's Bevo Francis Award watch list. The list consists of 50 of the finest men's basketball players in the country who compete in the affiliations of NCAA Division II-III, NAIA Division I-II, USCAA and NCCAA. He is 67 points away from 1,800 career points and becoming the all-time leading scorer at Delta State. The Sevierville, Tenn., native is having a stellar season, as he has led all scorers in 14 of Delta State's 19 conference games and has led DSU in every league game but one.
Head Coach
Jim Boone needs two wins to eclipse 500 career victories.
The Green-and-White maintain the top spot in a majority of the defensive categories in the league: scoring defense (66.6 ppg), field goal percentage defense (40.5%), rebounding offense (39.8 rpg) and rebounding defense (32.0 rpg).
Following this week's matchups, DSU will face in-state rival Mississippi College in Clinton on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up regular season play. The Statesmen have clinched a GSC Tournament berth, which will begin on Tuesday, March 1 at a campus site.
