Statesmen Fall 71-66 to MC; Schmidt Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer

CLINTON, Mississippi – Delta State University men's basketball suffered a 71-66 loss at the hands of in-state rival Mississippi College on Thursday night, despite Devin Schmidt becoming Delta State's new all-time leading scorer.

    How It Happened
  • The Statesmen held the lead for a majority of the first half, starting with Jack Madgen's layup at the 17:36 mark to give DSU the 7-5 edge.
  • Delta State went up by its largest lead of the half, 25-17, on a Devin Schmidt 3-pointer with 8:51 to go.
  • Mississippi College slowly began to mount a comeback. The Choctaws regained the lead, 31-29, at the 4:11 mark when Jonathan McGee drained a three.
  • MC closed out first-half action on a 15-6 run to take a 40-33 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
  • The Green-and-White began to close the gap to start the second half and quickly took back the lead. Madgen's jumper with 14:03 to play gave the Statesmen the 45-44 edge.
  • DSU went up by 10, 58-48, on a Brett Warner layup with 9:16 remaining on the game clock.
  • The Choctaws went on a 15-4 run over a span of 6:04 to regain the lead 65-64 with just over two minutes to play.
  • MC used a 3-pointer from McGee to go up 69-66 with 39 seconds left. The Choctaws executed at the free throw line down the homestretch, picking up the 71-66 win.

    Notables
  • Devin Schmidt's 3-pointer at the 14:24 mark in the first half made him the new all-time leading scorer at Delta State. He passed Carl Brown (1983-86) with 1,799 career points who had held the record for 30 years. Schmidt now has 1,819 career points in three seasons.
  • Three Statesmen scored in double figures: Schmidt (24), Madgen (14) and Kilpatrick (11). Kilpatrick, a junior guard, added 10 boards, recording his third double-double of the season.

  • Mississippi College scored 20 points off 18 Delta State turnovers.
 
Who's Next
  • With the loss, the Statesmen earn the No. 5 seed in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. They will likely play North Alabama in Florence, Ala.
