Softball Splits on First Day at SAU Tournament

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Delta State University softball team split a pair of games on the first day of the Southern Arkansas Tournament on Friday at the SAU Softball Complex. In game one, the Lady Statesmen dropped Lincoln 6-1, before dropping a 2-1 decision to Southwest Baptist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
 
  • Kaitlin Moore opened the scoring for DSU with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first, scoring Abi Gibson and Kassidy Tally.
  • Lincoln scored its lone run of the contest in the second on an infield single by Jessica Wolken.
  • DSU scored the final four runs of the game in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI double by Abi Gibson, and RBI singles by Moore and Madison Zoeller.
  • The teams combined for just five hits for the rest of the contest.
  • Taylor Johnson (1-2) earned her first victory of the season, as she allowed one run on just four hits with three strikeouts.
  • Madison Ragar (0-1) allowed all six runs on nine hits in five innings.
  • Moore (3-for-4) was the only DSU player with multiple hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
 
  • After DSU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first, SBU pitcher Kacey Ayers forced a line out and a ground out to end the inning.
  • The Bearcats took advantage of a pair of walks in the bottom half of the inning when Dana Graves singled through the left side to score a run.
  • The Lady Statesmen scored their lone run of the contest in the third, when Katelyn Westbrook was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • After retiring nine straight SBU hitters, DSU pitcher Katie Justice gave up a leadoff double in the seventh inning to Lyndie Routh. Following a sacrifice bunt put the winning run on third with one out, Justice forced an infield pop out to the shortstop, but Kori Hillenburg singled through the left side to end the game.
  • Justice (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
  • Ayers (1-0) allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts and five walks.
  • Gibson, Moore and Rainer Hodges recorded the hits for DSU.
 
STAT OF THE DAY
 
  • The Lady Statesmen stranded nine runners in the loss to SBU.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
 
  • With her double in the first inning of game one, Moore tied former teammate Amber Adcock's DSU career record of 50.  Moore also collected her 200th career hit with her second inning single to center.
  • The loss to SBU marked the first time this season that the Lady Statesmen did not score first.
  • All three DSU losses have come by a single run.
 
UP NEXT
 
  • The Lady Statesmen continue play at the SAU Tournament with a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 6. DSU is scheduled to face Newman at 10 a.m. and Rogers State at noon.
