Statesmen Fall To Boll Weevils, 13-10

MONTICELLO, Arkansas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello (3-1) used an eight-run seventh inning to erase a 9-3 deficit and upend Delta State University (3-1) 13-10 at Weevils Field on Tuesday. Brandon Cummins had four hits, while Trent Giambrone drove in three runs to lead the Statesmen.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arkansas-Monticello grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Corey Wood reached on a fielder's choice that scored Nick Piraino in the bottom of the first.
  • The Statesmen tied the game 1-1 on Trent Giambrone's first home run of the season in the top of the second.
  • Travis Steinke hit a solo home run in the fifth, and Kevin Fitzpatrick doubled and scored on an error in the sixth for UAM to regain the lead, 3-1.
  • Delta State plated eight runs in the seventh to take a 9-3 lead. Giambrone produced an RBI-double, while Ben Pickard belted a two-run home run to center to highlight the inning. Nick Morgan, Will Robertson, Ethan Gill and Kyle St. Pierre each recorded RBIs in the inning.
  • The Boll Weevils answered with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead,11-9. UAM had five hits and took advantage of three DSU errors in the inning.
  • Juwan Burney drew a leadoff walk and came home on a Brandon Cummins single to center to cut the deficit to 11-10 in the top of the eighth.
  • Steinke launched a two-run home run to cushion the Weevils' lead, 13-10, in the bottom of the eighth, a score that stood for the final.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORES
  • Kyle St. Pierre (1B) and Dakota Glore (DH) made their first starts at Delta State. St. Pierre recorded an RBI, and Glore drew a leadoff walk in DSU's offensive rampage in the seventh inning.
  • Austin Rice returned to action after missing the 2015 season due to an injury. Rice worked five innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. 
  • Giambrone's home run in the second was his first of the season and fourth of his DSU career.
  • Pickard's two-run home run in the seventh was his first of the season and eighth as a Statesmen.
  • Delta State's eight-run seventh was the first eight-run inning since scoring eight runs against Alabama Huntsville on May 4, 2015 in the GSC Tournament in Livingston, Ala.
