Delta State Falls to Nova Southeastern, 75-64, in South Region Tournament

JACKSON, Tennessee – The Delta State University women's basketball team closed out the 2015-16 season with a 75-64 loss in the opening round of the NCAA South Region Tournament on Friday, March 11 at Fred DeLay Gym on the campus of Union University. Chelsey Rhodes led all scorers with 26 points.

    How It Happened
  • Chelsey Rhodes scored the first basket 55 seconds into the contest, giving DSU the slight 2-0 advantage.
  • The score was tied once at 2-2 at the 8:43 mark before Anissa Jackson jumper with 8:23 to go in the first quarter gave Delta State the 4-2 lead. The Lady Statesmen possessed the lead through the end of the first quarter.
  • DSU held the 19-16 edge after the first quarter. Rhodes had 15 of the Green-and-White's 19 points.
  • Nova Southeastern inched within three points, 21-18, on a Kayla Wright layup at the 7:38 mark in the second quarter before the Lady Statesmen sparked a 10-1 run over 3:08 to take the 28-22 advantage with 4:30 to go before halftime.
  • The Sharks outscored DSU 9-5 to close out the second quarter, but the Lady Statesmen maintained the narrow lead, 33-31, to head into the locker room.
  • Nova took its first lead in the opening seconds of the second half on a Taylor Buie 3-pointer, 35-34, and continued to build on the momentum. The Sharks mounted a 17-2 run, highlighted by three 3-pointers, to extend their lead to 48-35 with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter.
  • NSU outscored Delta State 19-6 in the third quarter to take a 50-39 lead into the final quarter.
  • Scoring went back and forth, as both teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter.
  • Delta State cut it to six, 61-55, on a pair of free throws from Rhodes, but the Lady Statesmen could never overcome the deficit, as they fell to Nova 75-64.

    Notables
  • Rhodes led all scorers with 26 points, her 15th 20-point game this season. The Monticello, Ark., native finished her career ranking sixth on the all-time scoring list at Delta State with 1,803 points and second in the record book for threes made and attempted (206-of-616).
  • Aspriona Gilbert added 11 points, her 11th double-figure game this season.
  • Seven Lady Statesmen had at least four rebounds in the contest.
  • Delta State has met Nova Southeastern just twice in program history, both coming in the NCAA South Region Tournament. The first meeting was on March 8, 2013 in the Sweet Sixteen, when Rhodes was a freshman. The Sharks defeated DSU 78-56.
  • Nova shot 45.1 percent from the floor on the game, diminishing Delta State's national best, season average field goal percentage defense (35.2 percent). The Lady Statesmen also gave up a season-high 75 points, entering the game holding opponents to an average 49.5 points per game.
