CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Timely pitching from
Justin Vincent and
Tre Hobbs lifted Delta State University baseball over No. 9 University of Alabama Huntsville on Saturday. The Statesmen took both games of the doubleheader, 7-1 in game one and 9-2 in the night cap.

HOW IT HAPPENEDGAME ONE- Delta State threatened early in its first at-bat. With the bases loaded, Ben Pickard grounded out to first base, while Brandon Cummins scored from third base to give the Statesmen the early 1-0 edge.
- The Statesmen added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth when Will Robertson walked with the bases loaded, and Ethan Gill hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field, extending DSU's lead to 3-0.
- Huntsville made its way on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, cutting the deficit to 3-1, on an Austin Sanders sacrifice fly.
- Trent Giambrone brought the DSU lead back to three runs, 4-1, with an RBI double to right field, scoring Cummins from first. Later in the at-bat, Pickard reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Giambrone, to set the score at 5-1 in favor of the Green-and-White.
- Pickard picked up his third and fourth RBIs of the game in the bottom of the eighth, providing two insurance runs for Delta State and taking a 7-1 lead into the last inning.
- One Charger reached base in the top of the ninth, but Justin Vincent struck out the last batter of the game to earn his third win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENEDGAME TWO- Pickard picked up where he left off in game one, getting the Statesmen on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, 1-0, with an RBI double to right field.
- UAH's Tanner Gardner evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the third on an RBI groundout to second base.
- Heads-up base running by the Statesmen allowed them to regain the lead in the bottom of the third, 2-1. Erick Santiago scored on a double steal executed perfectly.
- The Statesmen extended their lead to 7-1, scoring five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth. Colton Welch, Santiago, Cummins and Giambrone recorded hits in the inning, including a triple from Cummins and a home run from Giambrone.
- A sacrifice fly from Huntsville's Wright Hackett in the top of the sixth plated one run to notch the score at 7-2.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Pickard recorded his second and third RBIs of the game, sixth and seventh of the doubleheader, on a single to right center field to give the Statesmen the 9-2 advantage.
- Tre Hobbs retired the side in order in UAH's last at-bat to pick up his sixth win of the season.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORES- The 7-1 game one victory marked Delta State's first series-opening win in Gulf South Conference play.
- Justin Vincent (3-1) and Tre Hobbs' (6-1) respective complete games marked the third and fourth consecutive complete games in Gulf South Conference action. Hobbs has thrown five consecutive complete games
- The Green-and-White defense turned a season-high four double plays in game one. They had only turned two in a game entering the series.
- Delta State is 11-3 when scoring first this season.
- Cummins' triple in the fourth inning marked the ninth of his career. He is now tied for fifth in the DSU record book with Brett Donahoo (2004-05) and Barry Lyons (1979-82). The senior from Drew now has 12 multiple hit games.
- Pickard now has nine multiple-RBI games this season. Giambrone recorded his seventh multiple-RBI game and extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
- Two Statesmen, Jacob Swiney and Will Robertson, are on a five-game hitting streak.
- The Chargers entered the series with Delta State averaging 7.3 runs per game. UAH scored three combined in the doubleheader.
