West Florida Hits Way to Victory Over No. 21 Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of West Florida softball team produced 13 hits, and limited the No. 21 Delta State University softball team to just two, in a 6-1 victory in Gulf South Conference action on Sunday at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The visitors opened the scoring for the third straight game, when Emily Pettigrew scored on a wild pitch by DSU starter Taylor Johnson.
  • DSU missed a chance to respond in the bottom of the inning, as Kassidy Tally was picked off at third after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt.
  • UWF made it 2-0 in the second on a two-out RBI double by Caitlin Steel.
  • After West Florida scored its third run of the contest in the fourth, DSU scored its lone run of the series in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice RBI by Kaitlin Moore.
  • The Argos tacked on three runs in the fifth, after two straight hits with two outs led to a three run home run by Kaylyn Chapman.
  • Chapman (18-5) allowed one run on just two hits, with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
  • Johnson (13-7) surrendered six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in five innings. Katie Justice allowed two hits in two innings of relief.
  • Taylor Johnson (13-5) recorded her second victory in as many games, as she pitched 4.1 innings in relief of starting pitcher Katie Justice. Johnson retired 12-of-15 batters, before surrendering four runs in the seventh.
 
 
STAT OF THE DAY:
  • Five-of-six UWF runs came with two outs.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • DSU surrendered 13 hits in two-of-three contests against UWF.
  • The Lady Statesmen have allowed 13 hits in three of their last four contests.  
  • With her RBI in the fourth, Moore has 169 for her career, which is tied for seventh-most in DSU history. She is now three away from tying the school record held by Alyse Hasty.
  • The one run in 19 innings is the lowest output this season, and is tied for the fewest since the 2015 GSC Tournament.
  • UWF has limited DSU to just four runs in the last 40 innings.

UP NEXT:
 DSU will host Valdosta State University for the last series of the regular season. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 23.
