Valdosta State Pitches Way to Sweep of Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Valdosta State held the Delta State University softball team to just one run over 13 innings, as it swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday at University Field. VSU held on to win 1-0 in the opener, and pulled away for a 9-1 (6) victory in game two.  DSU honored seniors Kassidy Tally, Katelyn Westbrook and Kaitlin Moore before the games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE 
  • After stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the first, the visitors scored the lone run of the contest in the third, when Kiley Rusen singled home Danielle Patterson.
  • DSU left at least one runner stranded in the last five innings of the contest, while Valdosta State left runners in four of the last five frames.
  • The Lady Statesmen had one of their best chances of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Jordan Jones doubled down the right field line, but three consecutive batters failed to advance her.
  • Caitlyn Calhoun (25-4) allowed five hits, with seven strikeouts and three walks.
  • Taylor Tucker (12-6) surrendered one run on nine hits.
  • No DSU players recorded multiple hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME TWO
  • VSU opened the scoring in the second with an RBI single, and added two more runs on a sac bunt that led to error.
  • The Lady Statesmen scored their lone run of the day in the third on an RBI single by Morgan Kazerooni.
  • VSU powered its way to four runs in the fourth on an RBI single, and back-to-back home runs, including a two-run shot by Jaime Phillips, and a solo blast by Rusen.
  • VSU added single runs in the fifth and sixth to finish the game.
  • Huntyre Elling (11-6) allowed one run on six hits in 5.1 innings. Calhoun struck out the last two batters to finish the game.
  • Taylor Johnson (13-8) allowed nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits in six innings.
  • Tally led DSU with two hits in three at-bats.
 
STAT OF THE DAY:
  • DSU left 16 runners on base, including nine in the first game.
 
        
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • DSU has scored just two runs in its last 32 innings.
  • The doubleheader sweep by VSU marked the second home GSC series loss for DSU, and the third series loss of the season.
  • With the setback in game one, DSU is now 10-6 in contests decided by one run.
  • Game one marked the fifth time this season that Tucker has stared a game in which she has allowed one run or less.

DSU will look to salvage the series in the finale with VSU on Sunday, April 24. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
