Statesmen Take Doubleheader From CBU

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Senior Will Robertson belted two home runs with a career-high seven RBIs to lead Delta State University (22-10, 15-5 GSC) to a 26-0 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday at Harvey Stadium-Ferriss Field. Ethan Gill and Robertson combined for five RBIs to lead the Statesmen to a 10-5 victory in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Christian Brothers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on RBI singles by Caleb Goodwin and Michael Halley.
  • The Statesmen answered with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the second. Dakota Glore got the Statesmen on the board with an RBI double, and a Brandon Cummins sac fly tied the game at 2-2. Ethan Gill doubled in two runs, and Will Robertson singled in a run to give DSU a 5-2 advantage.
  • CBU pushed three runs across in the fourth to tie the game, 5-5. Lucas Castleberry highlighted the inning with an RBI single, while another run crossed the plate on a throwing error. Caleb Goodwin advanced home from third when Mickey Smith was thrown out trying to steal.
  • Brandon Cummins tripled to lead off the bottom of the fourth and scored on a Giambrone sac fly to give the Statesmen a 6-5 lead.
  • Jacob Swiney singled and scored on a Welch double to extend the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Statesmen added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to build the lead to 10-5. Cummins led off with a bunt single and scored on a Robertson double. Robertson scored on a Gill triple, while Gill came home on a Swiney double.
  • Justin Vincent (4-1) started and picked up the win for the Statesmen. Vincent struck out five while allowing five runs on 10 hits through seven innings.
  • CBU starter Peyton Sanderlin (2-7) took the loss allowing 10 runs on 15 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • The Statesmen struck for 11 runs on seven hits in the bottom of the first to take an early 11-0 lead. Robertson and Gill belted three-run home runs, and Cummins had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
  • A Robertson grand slam highlighted a six-run second that increased the Statesmen lead to 17-0.
  • Delta State tacked on a seven spot in the third inning to make the score 24-0. Cummins had a two-RBI triple followed by two-run doubles by Swiney and Andrew Bryan.
  • The Statesmen capped the scoring in game two with two runs in the fourth.
  • Tre Hobbs improved to 8-1, allowing no runs on three hits with two strikeouts in five innings pitched.
  • Jack Parker was the pitcher of record for CBU, falling to 1-7. Parker allowed nine runs on five hits with three walks in less than an inning of work.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORES
  • Robertson belted two home runs and drove in seven RBIs, both career highs.
  • Cummins had a triple in each game to move into a tie for third on the DSU all-time triples list with 11. 
  • Juwan Burney's two-run home run in the fourth was his first home run as a Statesmen.
  • Andrew Bryan's double in the third inning of game two was his first career extra base hit.
  • The Statesmen had a season-high nine doubles in game two, eclipsing the old mark of five against Christian Brothers (4.2.16/Game 1), Arkansas Tech (2.16.16) and Lee University (2.28.16).
  • Delta State had 20 extra base hits on the afternoon to push the season total to 124. The Statesmen had five doubles and two home runs in game one and four home runs, eight doubles and one triple in game two.
  • The season-high 13 extra bases hits in game two included a season-high nine doubles.
  • The 26 runs on 21 hits in game two were also season highs. DSU had 17 runs versus Lee University (2.28.16) and 19 hits against West Alabama (2.21.16).
  • DSU starting pitcher Tre Hobbs was lifted in the sixth inning, ending his string of six straight complete games but earned his sixth straight win and improved to 8-1.
  • The Statesmen extended their GSC winning streak to nine games.
  • Head Coach Mike Kinnison now has 832 career victories with the doubleheader sweep.
