FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 5 seed Delta State University softball team racked up 16 hits in a 7-2 victory over No. 4 seed University of Alabama in Huntsville, but were held to just three in a 4-0 loss to No. 1 seed and host University of North Alabama on Thursday at the UNA Softball Complex.
DSU will face No. 6 seed Shorter University in an elimination game on Friday at 10 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME ONE
- The Lady Statesmen exploded for five runs in the top of the first, using an RBI double by Morgan Kazerooni, a two-RBI single by Madison Zoeller and a two-run home run by Carah Nunez. Nunez is now tied for second on the team with six round-trippers.
- After DSU left the bases loaded in the second and third innings, UAH scored their lone runs of the contest on a two-out double by Taylor Wascavage.
- Nunez responded, making the score 7-2, when she drove in her third and fourth runs of the game with an RBI single to right center, scoring Kazerooni and Kaitlin Moore.
- Taylor Tucker (13-6) went the distance, and allowed two runs on eight hits with one strikeout and three walks.
- Kimberly Jack (8-3) pitched four innings, and surrendered seven runs on 14 hits with one strikeout and two walks. Taylor Doriety allowed two hits in three innings of relief.
- Abi Gibson, Nunez and Kara Lane Nowell recorded three hits to lead DSU.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME TWO
- After the Lady Statesmen left a pair of runners on base in the opening frame, GSC Player of the Year Brooklynn Clark drove in Bailey Nelson with a sacrifice fly to left field.
- The Lions made the score 3-0 in the bottom of the third, when Clark smacked a two-out home run with a runner on.
- UNA finished the scoring in the sixth on an RBI double by Madeline Lee.
- Carpenter (22-3) allowed three hits, six walks and struck out three in seven innings.
- Taylor Johnson (13-9) gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings.
- Gibson, Kazerooni and Nunez recorded the hits for DSU.
STAT OF THE DAY:
In the opener, six DSU starters recorded multiple hits, and eight-of-nine starters had at least one.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- After being limited to just 28 hits over its previous six contests, DSU exploded for 16 in the victory over UAH.
- In the opener, Nunez matched her career high with four RBI's. Her previous four RBI effort came on Feb. 20 against West Alabama.
- With her double in the fourth inning in game one, Moore now has 22 for her career, which is one away from tying the DSU record held by Ashlee Nodhturft.
- Nowell's three hits in the opener are a career high.
- DSU is now --- when scoring the first run of the game.
- The five run first inning in the opener marked the most runs in a frame for DSU since plating nine in the third inning of a 10-2 victory over Christian Brothers on April 2.
- The Lady Statesmen picked up their first postseason victory over UAH since a 6-5 triumph in the 2012 edition of the GSC Tournament.
- Tucker has allowed two or fewer earned runs in her last two starts.
