CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State University junior
Tre Hobbs was named the South Region Pitcher of the Year by the NCBWA and D2CCA while four Statesmen earned All-South Region laurels announced by the respective organizations.
Will Robertson (OF),
Trent Giambrone (2B), and Hobbs (P) were named to the NCBWA First-Team while
Dalton Moats (P) was a second-team selection. Robertson and Hobbs were also voted to the D2CCA First-Team and
Ethan Gill (3B), Moats and Giambrone garnered second team honors.
Hobbs adds to a growing list of honors, which includes Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Year and First-Team All-GSC. Hobbs is 13-1 with a 3.05 ERA and 70 strikeouts this season. The Greenville, Miss., native is tied for fifth on the DSU single season wins list with Brad Lightsey (2005) and Brad Teague (1991).
Robertson leads Statesmen and the GSC in batting average (.412), doubles (28), and RBIs (74). The Falkner, Miss, native's 28 doubles is a DSU single season record and his .412 average is tied for 10th on the DSU single season list. Robertson was named First-Team All-GSC and earned GSC Player of the Week laurels on April 4, 2016.
Giambrone is hitting .388 with 21 doubles, 50 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with nine home runs. The Metairie, La., native was named First-Team All-GSC and was the GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. His 21 doubles are tied for sixth on the school's single season doubles list.
Moats is 11-3 with a 2.80 ERA and a team best 106 strikeouts this year. The Kansas City, Mo., native is fifth on the DSU single season strikeouts list and is tied for 11
th on the DSU single season wins list. He is the first pitcher since Josh Branstetter (104/2012) to record 100-plus strikeouts. Moats garnered GSC Pitcher of the Week honors three times (3.7 / 3.28 / 4.11) and was named Second-Team All-GSC this season.
Gill, an All-GSC Second-Team honoree, is hitting .342 with 19 doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 53 RBIs in 2016. The Pontotoc, Miss., native is one double shy of tying for seventh on the DSU single season doubles list and his eight home runs are second on the team this season.
The NCBWA All-Region teams are selected and voted on by the NCBWA Division II Regional committees and the D2CAA teams are nominated and voted on by NCAA Division II sports information directors.
Delta State is 40-16 overall this season, winning the schools 13
th GSC Baseball Championship on May 10, 2016. The Statesmen will play the winner of West Florida/West Georgia in an elimination game of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (CDT).
