BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Delta State University student-athletes received Gulf South Conference All-Academic honors this morning announced by the conference office. 60 student-athletes were named to the GSC honor roll, as well.
Two members of the Delta State Baseball Team and one member of the Delta State Men's Golf Program received All-Academic recognition.
For baseball, Senior Outfielder
Brett Burrell and senior pitcher
Drake Fontenot earned the recognition for their work on the field and in the classroom.
In Men's Golf, senior
Oliver Gemmel received recognition as an All-Academic honoree. Gemmel earned a top ten finish in the 2025 GSC Championships with a three-round total of six over par. In 15 rounds, Gemmel had a 73.5 scoring average along with two top ten finishes in his senior season. In the classroom, Gemmel graduated with a 3.95 GPA as a History Major.
Burrell was tabbed second team All-South Region honors in the outfield. Burrell also earned first team All-GSC, along with D2CCA and NCBWA first team All-South Region honors. Brett was a threat at the plate for Delta State in the 2025 season.
The Cleveland native led all hitters with a .373 batting average including 23 extra base hits and 51 runs driven in. In the classroom, the Cleveland native earned a bachelor's degree with a 3.81 GPA as a Health, Physical Education, and Recreation major. Brett is currently holding a 4.00 GPA as he is currently pursuing a master's degree.
Fontenot, earning the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the year, and D2CCA and NCBWA First Team All-South Region honors, had a tremendous season for the green and white as the Statesmen clinched their program's 37th NCAA Tournament berth. The Bossier City, La., native had a 2.50 ERA along with 86 strikeouts in 100.2 innings pitched for Delta State in their 2025 GSC Regular Season Championship season.
Drake has earned GSC Pitcher of the Week Honors five times this season and has broken the school record for consecutive shutout innings pitched with 39.1 from February 7th to March 14th. Fontenot currently holds a 3.57 GPA as a Sport Management major.
