Statesmen Open 2016 Campaign With Win Over Embry-Riddle

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Delta State men's soccer team opened the 2016 campaign with a 5-1 win over Embry-Riddle University on Sept. 1, at Signaigo Field in Memphis, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Embry-Riddle opened scoring in the second minute with a goal from Shane Butler.
  • Junior Ashley Walker got the offense going, scoring the first goal for the Statesmen in the 27th minute to even the score at 1-1.
  • At the 32nd minute mark, Andrew Aur scored Delta State's second goal to double the lead 2-1.
  • Senior Philip Dublin opened scoring in the second half with a header from a cross by Peyton Marter making the score 3-1.
  • Towards the end of the second half, Ricardo Filho provided the fourth goal from a Connor Hogg assist.
  • Freshmen Zachary Breaux finished the scoring in the 90th minute, giving DSU its fifth goal of the game, off an intercepted back pass to the keeper.
     
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Delta State scored three of its five goals in the second half.
     
BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
  • This marks the first ever season opener win for the Statesmen in their 12 years.
  • Also marks the most goals scored by the Statesmen in a season opener.
  • Aur's goal in the first half marks the third of his career.
  • Dublin's goal in the second half was the first of his career.
  • Filho also recorded his fourth goal as a Statesman.
  • Breaux made his first appearance and recorded his first goal of his career.
