Lady Statesmen Edge Out AUM 2-1

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The Delta State women's soccer team continued its winning streak with a thrilling 2-1 win over Auburn University at Montgomery on Friday, Sept. 16, at Delta Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Delta State struck first, when Anoucke Baas scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute off an assist by Tabitha Hayden.
  • Chelsie China tied the game 1-1 at the 30th  minute.
  • Rebecca Deegan had the game-winning goal scoring on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.
  • Baas and Deegan led the offense for the Lady Statesmen. Baas had six shots—three on goal—and one goal. Deegan had a shot, shot on goal, and one goal.  
  • Allison Singleterry, Ruby Mendez, and Chelsie China led the offense for the Warhawks. Singleterry fired five shots, three on goal, while Mendez had seven shots—two of which were on goal.  China scored the only goal for the Warhawks.
  • Emily Oldacre made five saves at goal and earned the win at post to improve 3-1 on the season. She came in the second half to replace Ella Hunkin, who made one save and conceded one goal.
  • In goal for the Warhwaks, Morgan Glenn suffered the loss. She conceded two goals on seven shots and made three saves.

STAT OF THE GAME:
  • The Warhawks fired 21 shots compared to seven from the Lady Statesmen.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Baas' goal marks the first of her career.
  • Deegan now moves into first place for most penalty kicks made in a season and career.  
  • The Lady Statesmen are now 4-1 on the season—the best start since 2009.
  • The three-game winning streak is the longest since 2008.  
  • Delta State's scoring offense ranks third in the nation and first in the Gulf South Conference.
  • The Lady Statesmen lead the nation and the league in assists per game averaging 5.25.
  • Delta State is ranked No. 2 in the nation in points per game and first in the GSC in points per game with 16.75. 
  • In just five games, the Lady Statesmen have topped 2015's goal total and surpassed the amount of wins. 
  • Oldacre tied the fourth place record for most wins in a season and career.
 
UP NEXT: The Lady Statesmen will open Gulf South Conference play against Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., on Sept. 18. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. CST.
