CLINTON, Miss. – The Delta State women's soccer team fell 3-1 against in-state rival Mississippi College on Sept. 18, in Clinton, Miss., for the first Gulf South Conference match of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Mississippi College struck first when Kyra Montes scored on an assist by Meghan Mauzy in the 9th minute.
- The Lady Statesmen faced their largest goal deficit of the season heading into halftime when Lauren Smith scored in the 24th minute on an assist by Emma Claire Furman to give Mississippi College a 2-0 lead over Delta State.
- Smith scored again in the 63rd minute to increase the Lady Choctaws' lead 3-0 over the Lady Statesmen.
- Catherine Thomson scored Delta State's lone goal of the game on an assist by Lakyn Cryder in the 84th minute.
- Thomson, Tabitha Hayden and Sam Naugthon led the Lady Statesmen offense, while Smith, Montes, and Lauren Kate Carter led the Lady Choctaws.
- Thomson had one goal, three shots and two shots on goal. Hayden tallied three shots, two on goal, and Naughton tallied two shots, two on goal for the Lady Statesmen.
- Smith scored two goals for the Lady Choctaws on two shots, both of which were on goal. Montes had one goal, one assist, and three shots—two of which were on goal. Carter had an assist, four shots, and three shots on goal.
- Emily Oldacre made a season high of 13 saves in goal. She conceded only three goals on 25 shots.
STAT OF THE GAME:
- The Lady Statesmen fired nearly two-thirds of their total shots in the game during the final 10 minutes of play.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS:
- The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lady Statesmen—the longest winning streak since 2008.
- The last time the Lady Statesmen won a conference opener was during an overtime win against the University of West Alabama in 2013.
- Oldacre's 13 saves were just two shy of tying the fifth place record for most saves in a single game.
- Thomson scored her fifth goal of the season. She now leads the team in goals. Earlier in the season, she tied the record for most goals scored during a game with three.
