Chargers Defeat Lady Statesmen, 3-1

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville used a pair of second half goals to defeat the Delta State women's soccer team 3-1 on Sept. 30 in Huntsville, Ala.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Maddie Maurcie scored in the 26th minute to give Alabama-Huntsville a 1-0 lead.
  • Heading into halftime, the Lady Statesmen led the Chargers in shots and shots on goals, but couldn't capitalize on their opportunities.
  • In the 56th minute, Taylor Guess put Delta State back in the running, scoring the equalizer with a header off a free kick by Rebecca Deegan
  • Mia Penton's header in the 64th minute gave UAH back the lead, 2-1.
  • Sydney Pfankuch sealed the win for the Chargers, scoring the final goal of the game in the 80th minute off an assist by Kayla Grimes.
  • The Chargers out-shot the Lady Statesmen 8-3 in the second half and had the edge on corner kicks.
  • Guess, Catherine Thomson and Taylor Schofield led the Lady Statesmen offense. Guess had DSU's lone goal, two shots and two shots on goal. Thomson had three shots, two on goal, and Schofield had one shot and one shot on goal.
  • In goal for the Lady Statesmen, Ella Hunkin suffered her first loss of the season. She faced 12 shots, made three saves, and conceded three goals.
  • Charger keeper, Larae Breaux faced nine shots, made four saves and allowed one goal.
 
STAT OF THE GAME:
  • Guess' goal in the 56th minute ended a 240-minute scoreless drought for the Lady Statesmen.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The loss marks the fourth straight loss for the Lady Statesmen.
  • The Lady Statesmen have yet to win a game after being down a goal.

  • Deegan recorded her first assist of the season.
