Statesmen Set For Road Trips At VSU, UWF

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - Currently on a five game winning streak and entering the rankings at No. 24, the Delta State University men's basketball team hits the road for a pair of Gulf South Conference matchups against Valdosta State and West Florida.

  • The Statesmen improve to 12-3 on the season and take the first place spor in the Gulf South Conference with a 7-2 record after securing a vital win against No. 21 Alabama Huntsville.
  • This week, DSU will hit the road for a two game road trip starting with a tough opponent in Valdosta State, who is tied for first in the GSC with a 7-2 record on Thursday, Jan. 19. The Blazers currently rank first in the GSC scoring an average 88.3 points per game and are on a four game win streak.
  • The series with VSU started in 1983 with the Blazers taking the inaugural 91-83 win in Valdosta. Thursday's matchup is the 42nd meeting all-time. Last season, the Statesmen lost on the road, but bounced back at home taking the win.
  • As a team, the Statesmen average 76.4 points per game, which ranks eighth in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, Delta State rank second in the GSC holding its opponents to an average 69 points per game and 41st in Division II.
  • Senior guard Devin Schmidt is averaging 24.9 points per game which ranks second in the league and 4.3 assists per game to rank fourth. Schmidt has scored 2,246 career points (21 ppg), is 43.7 percent (749-of-1713) from the floor and 36.6 percent from three-point range (267-of-729). He needs 323 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
  • The newcomers are making an impact on the floor. Among those, Cedric Harper is averaging 6.5 points and 5.6 boards per game. Harper ranks third in the league averaging 1.7 blocked shots per game.
