Harper Slams Delta State Past CBU In Closing Seconds

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – After a Cedric Harper dunk with five seconds to go, the Delta State University men's basketball team claimed the 65-64 victory and snapped the conference unbeaten streak of Christian Brothers University on Monday night at Canale Arena.

How It Happened:
  • Delta State opened the game on a 10-4 run early in the first half.
  • The Buccaneers quickly answered claiming their first lead of the night from a Joe Laravie three making the score 15-14 at the 11:43 mark.
  • The Statesmen entered the final 10 minutes of the first half on a 5-0, reclaiming the 19-15 lead after a Brett Warner three and Dietrich Taylor layup.
  • CBU went on a 16-7 run late in the first half and maintained the lead, 31-26, as both teams went into the locker room.
  • CBU shot 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) in the first half, while DSU was just 9-20 (45 percent).
  • Warner led the Statesmen with eight first half points, shooting 3-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-5 from the arch. Devin Schmidt and John Cornish followed with six points apiece, PJ Davis, Cedric Harper and Taylor tallied two points. Schmidt led with six rebounds, and Davis followed with three.
  • Both offenses were slow to start the second half with the Statesmen only scoring six points in the first five minutes while the Bucs scored only twice.
  • The Statesmen closed the gap to three points entering the final 10 minutes of the game, 44-47.
  • Late in the second half, both sides were back-and forth, but a 6-0 Statesmen run led to their first lead of the night since the first quarter, 55-53.
  • Going into the final minute of the game, CBU held the edge scoring 7 points over DSU's five since the fifth minute with the score 62-61.
  • Harper hit a huge dunk with five seconds to go in the game to secure the victory for the Statesmen, 65-64.
  • The Statesmen finished 23-of-48 (47.9 percent), while the Bucs were 27-62 (43.5 percent). Delta State finished 8-of-32 shooting (25 percent) from long-range, while Christian Brothers were 7-for-17 (41.2 percent)
  • Schmidt and Warner finished the game in double figures. Schmidt led the way with 27 points. Warner had 12 points, followed by Davis, Cornish and Harper with six apiece. Schmidt also led with 10 boards, followed by Davis with eight.
  • Jeff Larkin led the Buccaneers with 21 points. Alex Trentman finished with 14 points and four rebounds while Mitch Mays finished with 13 points.
