Statesmen Set For Contests At No. 19 UAH, UNA

CLEVELAND, Miss. -  The Delta State University men's basketball team closed out the weekend road trip winless after tough stints with Valdosta State and West Florida. This week, DSU will continue its road swing making the first stop at No. 19 Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 26, and then at North Alabama on Jan. 28.

  • The Statesmen are 12-5 on the season and fourth in the GSC with a 7-4 record.
  • This week, DSU will continue its road swing making the first stop at No. 19 Alabama Huntsville, who is currently second in the GSC table with a 9-2 record on Thursday, Jan. 26.
  • The Chargers are currently on a two-game winning streak and rank third in the GSC scoring an average 83 points per game.
  • The series with UAH started in 1983 with Delta State taking the inaugural 76-63 win in Cleveland. Saturday's matchup is the 34th meeting all-time. Earlier this season, the Statesmen upset Chargers at home. UAH is currently 5-1 at home.
  • UNA's matchup on Saturday marks the 88th meeting, with Delta State holding a slim 45-42 overall record against the Lions. The first meeting occurred on Dec. 9, 1949 and saw the Statesmen win 61-49 at home. Earlier this season, the Statesmen fended off the Lions at home. UNA is currently on a three game winning streak as well as an 8-4 record at Flowers Hall this season.
  • As a team, the Statesmen average 75.6 points per game, which ranks eighth in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, Delta State rank second in the GSC holding its opponents to an average 70 points per game.
  • Senior guard Devin Schmidt is averaging 24.4 points per game which ranks second in the league and 4.2 assists per game to rank fifth. Schmidt has scored 2,288 career points (21 ppg), is 43.5 percent (765-of-1759) from the floor and 36.6 percent from three-point range (272-of-744). He needs 281 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
  • The newcomers are making an impact on the floor. Among those, Cedric Harper is averaging 6.8 points and 5.6 boards per game. Harper ranks third in the league averaging 1.7 blocked shots per game.

Up next, after the road trip through Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama, the Green-and-White return home to Walter Sillers on Feb. 2 for a matchup against West Florida at 7:30 p.m., and then Feb. 4 against Valdosta State at 4 p.m.
