Statesmen Fall 77-72 in Back-and-Forth Affair at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Delta State University men's basketball team came up short in the final seconds as Alabama Huntsville held on for the 77-72 victory on Thursday night.

How It Happened:
  • The Statesmen got off to a fast start offensively going 3-for-9 in the first four minutes claiming a 6-5 lead.
  • The Chargers took the lead for the first time of the night after a Justin Ward jumper at the 12:23 mark.
  • John Cornish answered for the Statesmen after hitting a three-pointer to reclaim the 12-11 lead.
  • Inside the 10 minute mark, DSU maintained a 19-15 lead until Malik Cook-Stroupe hit a layup and three pointer to give the Chargers the lead at the 6:27 mark.
  • With 2:36 left to go in the half, the Statesmen extended the lead to 30-23 after a huge Brett Warner three pointer.
  • The Chargers surged back just before halftime down one point after going 10-4, but Delta State still led 34-33.
  • DSU finished the half 13-of-34 (38 percent) and 4-of-9 from long-range, while Alabama Huntsville was 12-of-30 (40 percent) from the field.
  • The Statesmen out-rebounded the Chargers by a slim margin of 22-18, and scored nine points off of four UAH turnovers.
  • Devin Schmidt led DSU with nine points and Ravion Henry had seven while Cornish followed with six from the field. Brandon Roberts led the Chargers with 10 first half points.
  • Seab Webster got the Charger offense going out of the locker room hitting a jumper and three pointer to give them a 38-36 lead.
  • Both offenses were back-and-forth, but UAH controlled by leading by as many as eight in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
  • The Chargers maintained the 61-53 lead going into the final 10 minutes shooting 9-of-16 for the half.
  • After going on the 11-3 run, the Statesmen tied the Chargers 64-64 at the 5:45 mark.
  • Entering the final three minutes of the game, both offenses were neck-and-neck but UAH maintained the 70-64 lead after a Webster layup.
  • After a PJ Davis dunk, the Statesmen were back within three points, but after two Webster free throws closed out the game and claimed the 77-72 victory.
  • DSU finished 28-of-70 (40 percent), while the Chargers were 25-of-58 (43 percent). UAH was 10-of-23 from the arch while the Statesmen were just 7-of-22. DSU out-rebounded UAH by a wide margin of 46-34 and forced nine turnovers, while committing eight of their own.
  • Chayce Elliott led Alabama Huntsville with 16 points and Webster secured 15. Ravion Henry led with 17 points, six boards and three steals while Schmidt finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Notables:          
  • This marks the third double-double of the season for Schmidt. He also broke into the 2,300 scoring mark with now a career 2,304 points.
  • For the first time this season, the Statesmen have lost three straight games.
