Cold-Shooting Dooms Lady Statesmen in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Delta State University women's basketball team gave up 46 second half points and shot just 28% over the same stretch as the University of Alabama Huntsville downed the Lady Statesmen at Spragins Hall 77-62.

How It Happened:
  • Ieysha Mays scored the first three buckets of the game for Delta State as Alabama Huntsville held a slim 8-6 advantage in the opening minutes. 
  • The Chargers responded to the close game by going on a 10-4 run, but DSU answered with a quick 6-2 run of their own, with Alondrea Rush beating the first half buzzer with a long three. 
  • Morgan Tipton scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Chargers held a 20-16 advantage after one quarter. 
  • Both sides went back-and-forth to open the second quarter, but DSU, down 23-19, used a 5-2 run to jump back out in front. 
  • Alondrea Rush hit a three as the Lady Statesmen took a 28-25 lead, just their second lead of the first half. 
  • The lead changed hands six times in the final 3:47 of the first half of action, as both teams hit the locker room with the score tied 31-31. 
  • Delta State shot 10-of-25 (40 percent) in the first half including going 2-of-5 from three (40 percent) and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe (82 percent).
  • Alondrea Rush led the way for DSU at the break with 12 points, while Aspriona Gilbert added five points and three rebounds and Ieysha Mays added six points in the opening half. 
  • The Chargers went 12-of-18 (67 percent) from the floor in the first half and shot just 1-of-5 from three-point land (20 percent). UAH hit 6-of-9 from the free throw line. 
  • Morgan Tipton led Alabama Huntsville with 11 first half points, while Loren Foster and Chandler Elder each chipped in six apiece. 
  • Tori Mallory opened scoring after halftime for the Lady Statesmen with a layup to give them a 33-31 lead over the Chargers.
  • The Chargers answered with back-to-back layups from Morgan Tipton and Allie Bolton to reclaim the 35-33 lead at the 8:14 mark.
  • Both offenses were back-and-forth for the first part of the third quarter, but the Chargers dominated leading by as many as 11 points.
  • UAH closed out the third quarter with two free throws and a layup to extend its lead to 54-43.
  • The Lady Statesmen opened scoring in the final stanza, but the Chargers continued their hot shooting going on a 7-0 run.
  • The DSU offense struggled shooting going without a basket for over half the quarter.
  • Inside three minutes, the Lady Statesmen climbed back to a nine point margin after a Kneeland and Mays layup and one to make the score 55-64.
  • Gilbert and Herod hit a layup and Rush with a three inside a minute left in the game, but wasn't enough as the Chargers claim the 77-62 victory.
  • DSU finished 20-of-61 (33 percent), while the Chargers were 22-of-37 (60 percent). UAH was 5-of-11 from long-range. The Lady Statesmen were just 3-of-14. Alabama Huntsville out-rebounded DSU by a wide margin of 38-26, and forced 10 turnovers, while committing 20.
  • Tipton led Alabama Huntsville with 16 points while Johnson and Bolton secured 10 apiece. Rush led with 20 points and one rebound while Kneeland had 10 and Gilbert finished with nine points.
 
Notables:          
  • Rush's 20 points puts her in double-figures for the 13th time this season.
  • For the first time this season, the Lady Statesmen have lost three straight.
 
Who's Next:
  • The Lady Statesmen travel to Florence, Ala. to square off against North Alabama on Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. to close out the Gulf South Conference road trip.
