Statesmen Set To Host West Georgia and West Alabama

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - After splitting a pair of close games against Union and Christian Brothers, the Delta State University men's basketball team return home to host West Georgia and West Alabama in a Saturday-Monday slate.

TIP-OFF:
  • Delta State University men's basketball team bounced back from its third loss of the season with a 65-64 win over Christian Brothers in the closing seconds. The Statesmen improve to 8-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Gulf South Conference.
  • DSU will host a pair of tough opponents this weekend, University of West Georgia on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Statesmen will then face University of West Alabama on Monday, Jan. 9. The Green-and-White are 2-6 versus West Georgia under Coach Jim Boone and 3-6 against West Alabama.
  • The series with West Georgia started in 1985 with Delta State taking the inaugural 75-67 win in Cleveland. Saturday's matchup is the 45th meeting all-time. Last season, West Georgia swept the the series with DSU winning at home and on the road.
  • West Alabama's matchup on Monday marks the 68th meeting between the two schools. The first meeting occurred on Dec. 10, 1948 and saw Delta State win 50-44 at home. Last season, DSU split the series with UWA winning on the road, but falling at home.
  • As a team, the Statesmen average 76.5 points per game, which ranks ninth in the league. On the defensive side of the ball, Delta State rank second in the GSC holding its opponents to an average 69 points per game and tied for 45th in Division II.
  • Senior guard Devin Schmidt is averaging 23.6 points per game and 4.7 assists per game to rank second in the league in both categories. Schmidt has scored 2,133 career points (20.7 ppg), is 43.8 percent (712-of-1626) from the floor and 36.9 percent from three-point range (255-of-691). He needs 436 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer.
  • The newcomers have adjusted quickly and are making an impact on the floor. Among those, Cedric Harper is averaging 6.2 points and 5.8 boards per game.

Up next, the Green-and-White host a pair of conference games, as the Statesmen take on North Alabama on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Alabama Huntsville on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m.
