Lady Statesmen Kick Off Five-Game Homestand With UWF

CLEVELAND, Mississippi - After holding North Alabama to its lowest scoring output of the season and notching a huge road victory over the Lions at Flowers Hall, the Delta State University women's basketball team gears up for a five-game homestand that kicks off with the University of West Florida Argonauts on Feb. 2.

TIP-OFF NEWS AND NOTES
  • Feb. 2 will be Organization Night at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Delta State campus organizations will compete for a chance at $200/$100 donation prizes and the DSU Spirit Cup. Community organizations can use the code "DSUORG17" to get 50% off online ticket purchases. 
  • This will be the 23rd meeting all-time between Delta State and West Florida, with DSU holding a 12-10 series advantage. The Lady Statesmen also lead the all-time series with Valdosta State 38-6.
  • Two weeks ago, the Lady Statesmen dropped contests to the Argonauts and the Blazers, but play them at Walter Sillers Coliseum this time around, where they boast a 6-1 record. 
  • After having the best scoring-defense mark in NCAA Division II basketball and the Gulf South Conference last season, the Lady Statesmen currently rank first in scoring defense in the GSC, giving up 58.2 points per game. 
  • Defensively, Delta State has held the opposing team's leading scorer to single-digit points on four separate occasions this season. 
  • Sophomore point guard Alondrea Rush has continued to lead the offense for Delta State, averaging a team-high 13.1 points per game. She is also adding 2.8 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game while playing 34.9 minutes per contest.
  • West Florida is the Gulf South's best team through the first half of conference play and is the league's best rebounding team. The Argonauts have three players in the top seven in the league in rebounding. Toni Brewer is averaging 12.1 rebounds per game, while Katie Bobos pulls down 10.5 rebounds per game and broke UWF's school rebounding record when the Argonauts and Lady Statesmen lastmet in Pensacola. Courtney Meyer rips down 8.5 rebounds a game, which is seventh in the league. Brewer leads West Florida with 14.5 points per game and Bobos is averaging 12.2 points per game. Alex Coyne is the leading assist lady in the GSC with 6.2 assists, and is fourth in the league in minutes at 35.2 minutes per game.
  • Under first year head coach Carley Kuhns, Valdosta State is off to a 12-8 start and a 9-5 mark in GSC play. The Blazers currently sit in the fourth spot in the GSC standings, and are led by Madi Mitchell. Mitchell is averaging 17.0 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per contest. VSU has three other players averaging double-figures, with Kenya Samone Dixon averaging 15.1 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game and is the GSC's leading three-point shooter at 41.9%. Sonya Franklin and Aaliyah Cheatham are each adding 12.5 points per game to the Blazers offensive attack.

After tilts against West Florida and Valdosta State, the Lady Statesmen continue the homestand with Mississippi College at home on Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. Delta State then hosts Lee on Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. and Shorter on Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
