Delta State Softball Splits on Second Day of Falcon Frenzy

Montevallo, Alabama – The Delta State softball team shutout Tuskegee University 7-0 in game one, but dropped game two, 3-1, against Ursuline College on Saturday, Feb. 11, to split the second day of the Montevallo Falcon Frenzy Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Delta State struck first when Abi Gibson scored on a groundout by Madison Zoeller in the bottom of the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, Gibson tripled to leftfield, scoring Bailie Springfield for Delta State's second run of the game.
  • Springfield doubled, driving home Kory Watterson for Delta State's third run of the game in the bottom of the third. She later scored on Kara Lane's RBI single to shortstop.
  • Jordan Jones made the score 5-0 when she homered to centerfield in the next inning. Carlie Vice then grounded out to shortstop, scoring Zoeller for the sixth run of the game.
  • Chelsea Lamping scored Delta State's final run of the game in the bottom off an RBI single by Kristen Mitchell.
  • Freshman Mari Alex Sandridge pitched the shutout, allowing only two hits, while striking out eight.
  • Tuskegee's Jasmine Snyder suffered the loss (0-3), giving up seven runs on 10 hits. Roneshia Rudolph and Jamaica Williams collected Tuskegee's only two hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • The game remained pitchers' duel until the top of the sixth inning when Ursuline College took the lead. On a sac bunt play, Kaitlin Krajcik reached to first on the throwing error to first base by Taylor Johnson, while Brigitte Snow and Caitlin Fletcher scored to give Ursuline a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Kory Watterson homered to center field, cutting Ursuline's lead 2-1.
  • In the top of the seventh, Elise Presutto scored on a fielding error by Kara Lane Nowell, clinching the win 3-1.
  • With two outs, the Lady Statesmen loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Watterson flied out to third, ending the game.
  
STAT OF THE DAY 
  • The Lady Statesmen set a season high of six stolen bases in game one against Tuskegee. 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 
  • The seven runs were the second most Delta State has scored this season.
  • In her first start in the circle, Sandridge struck out eight, tying the team lead for most strikeouts.
  • All four wins have come when Delta State scores first.
  • Gibson has reached base safely in all nine games. Her triple in game one was the first of her career.
  • Jones and Watterson recorded their first home runs of the season. Jones' home run in the first game was the fifth of her career, while Watterson's was the sixth of her career.
