Delta State Softball Defeats Truman State and Montevallo to Conclude Falcon Frenzy

Montevallo, Alabama – The Delta State softball team concluded the Montevallo Falcon Frenzy with a pair of wins, defeating Truman State University, 1-0, and the University of Montevallo 14-1 on Feb. 12, 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when Delta State found the breakthrough. Abi Gibson started off the inning with a double to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kory Watterson singled to left field, driving home Gibson for Delta State's game-winning run.
  • The Bulldogs tried to make a comeback, but the Lady Statesmen defense preserved the 1-0 lead.
  • Taylor Tucker (1-2) earned the win in the circle for Delta State. The senior right-handed pitcher pitched the shutout, allowing only four hits.   
  • Truman's Nicolette Simpson suffered the loss (0-2), giving up one run on five hits.
  • Gibson led the Lady Statesmen at the plate going 2-for-4. Watterson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Christa Reisinger and Alyssa Rivera led the Bulldogs' offense, each going 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • A pair of 2 RBI singles in the top of the second and third innings gave Delta State a 4-0 lead. Abi Gibson drove in Delta State's first two runs with a 2 RBI single that scored Mari Alex Sandridge and Austin Pruitt. Carah Nunez plated Delta State's third and fourth runs during the top of the third when she singled to right centerfield, scoring Madison Zoeller and Jordan Jones.
  • A seven-run rally in the top of the fourth increased Delta State's lead 11-0 over Montevallo. Zoeller's 2 RBI single up the middle gave Delta State a 6-0 lead. Nunez drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Jones for DSU's seventh run. Zoeller scored the eighth run of the game on another bases loaded walk. Carlie Vice was the hit by a pitch, which brought Kory Watterson home for the ninth run. Nowell drew the Lady Statesmen's third bases-loaded walk of the inning, scoring Nunez. Pepper Baker and Gibson were both hit by a pitch, which plated the final two runs of the inning.
  • Saralyn Campbell scored Montevallo's lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice.
  • But the Lady Statesmen weren't done yet. Zoeller and Shelby Newsom walked to start the top of the fifth, and Nunez singled, scoring Zoeller for DSU's 12th run. With bases loaded, Baker was hit again by a pitch, scoring Nunez for Delta State's 13th run. With bases loaded, Gibson singled up the middle, scoring Vice. Lane was called out at home to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the mercy rule kicked in. The Falcons began the top of the fifth with a lead-off single down the rightfield line. But a flyout, out at second on a fielder's choice, and groundout ended the game.
  • Freshman Bailie Springfield earned her second win of the season in the circle. In five innings of work, she allowed only one run on five hits.
  • Starting pitcher Abby Pratt (2-4) suffered the loss for the Falcons, allowing eight runs, all earned, on 10 hits. Anna Marie McGlone came on in relief of Pratt, giving up six earned runs on two hits.
  • Celestia Davila led the Falcons offense going 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Gibson, Jones, Nunez, and Sandridge led the Lady Statesmen offense combining for nine of DSU's 14 RBIs and nine of DSU's 12 hits.  
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • The seven runs in the top of the fourth inning against Montevallo were the most Delta State has scored in a single inning so far this season.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Tucker earned her first win of the season in game one. She ranks ninth in school history in career wins (29) and 10th in games pitched (78). 
  • All six wins have come when Delta State scores first.
  • With the win against Truman, the Lady Statatesmen earned their second shutout of the season.  
  • Gibson has reached base safely in all 11 games and is riding a six-game hitting streak.
  • Nunez and Gibson each set a game-high of four RBIs.
  • Delta State's 14 runs and eight walks in game two were a season high.
