Delta State Softball Splits Gulf South Conference Opener with West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Alabama – The Delta State softball team dropped its opening Gulf South Conference contest 3-1 to West Alabama, but rallied back to defeat the Tigers 7-2 in extra innings during game two to split the doubleheader at West Alabama on Feb. 18, 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Kara Lane Nowell doubled to score Madison Zoeller in the top of the second to give Delta State a 1-0 lead.
  • West Alabama rallied back in the bottom of the third inning when Audrey Diekmann scored on an RBI groundout by Ashley Stassin to tie the game 1-1. Kierra Hague homered to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
  • The Lady Statesmen managed to hold the Tigers to a one-run lead until the bottom of the fifth when Stassin's RBI double gave West Alabama a 3-1 lead.
  • Nowell walked to start the top of the seventh, and Gibson was hit by a pitch with one out. Jordan Jones fouled out, and Carah Nunez popped up to end the comeback effort.
  • Starting pitcher Bailie Springfield received a no decision. In 2.2 innings, she allowed one run on three hits. Brooke Watts pitched 0.1 innings in relief of Springfield and suffered the loss for Delta State, allowing one run on two hits. Taylor Tucker came in relief of Watts to close out the game. In three innings of work, Tucker gave up one run on three hits.
  •  Starting pitcher, Andrea Edmonds earned the win to improve to (3-2). She pitched the entire game, allowing one run on eight hits while striking out three.
  • Nowell, Zoeller, and Mari Alex Sandridge led the Lady Statesmen at the plate. Sandridge went 2-for-3. Nowell was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Zoeller was 1-for-3.
  • Stassin led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • In the top of the second, Kory Watterson scored on a sac bunt by Chelsea Lamping to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
  • Mari Alex Sandridge doubled, scoring Jordan Jones in the top of the third, to give Delta State a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the third, Diekmann homered to cut Delta State's lead 2-1. Two back-to-back walks put runners at first and second for UWA, but Smart flied out to end the threat.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Alison Craft's home run tied the game 2-2.
  • In the top of the fifth, Delta State used a three-run rally to retake the lead. Jones started the rally with a double that scored Gibson for Delta State's third run. Then Sandridge went yard smashing a two-run home run to give Delta State a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
  • The Tigers started to make a comeback in the bottom of the fifth. Stassin's solo shot to centerfield cut Delta State's lead to two runs, and Smart's RBI single made it a one-run game.
  • But Diekmann's third home run of the game evened the score, 5-5, in the top of the sixth.
  • With the score still tied 5-5 after seven innings of play, the game proceeded to extra innings.
  • In the top of the 10th inning, Springfield grounded out to score Gibson, and Delta State took a 6-5 lead. Zoeller doubled to score Watterson to give Delta State an insurance run and the Lady Statesmen headed to the bottom of the 10th with a 7-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the 10th, the Tigers managed to get runners on the corners with only one out. However, a line out and fly out ended the game.
  •  The Lady Statesmen went through four pitchers. Starting pitcher Taylor Johnson gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits. Brittany Taylor and Sandridge each pitched an inning of relief. Bailie Springfield earned the win in relief, pitching 3.2 innings while sacrificing only one hit.
  • Andrea Edmonds suffered the loss for the Tigers. She came on in relief of starting pitcher Ashley Strassin, and gave up two runs on six hits in five innings of work.
  • Sandridge, Watterson, and Jones combined for seven of Delta State's 13 hits and four RBIs.
  • Diekman and Craft led the Tigers' offense, combining for six of the Tigers' 10 hits.  
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • Delta State's 38 at bats in game two are a season high.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE 
  • This weekend's series marks the Gulf South Conference opener for both Delta State and West Alabama.
  • The Lady Statesmen are 7-1 when scoring the first run of the game.
  • With the win in game two, the Lady Statesmen earned their first conference win of the season.
  • Sandridge hit her first career home run as a Lady Statesman in game two.
  • Sophomore Abi Gibson has reached base safely in all 13 contests and is riding an eight-game hitting streak.
