Delta State Falls 5-1 to West Alabama in Series Finale

Livingston, Alabama – The Delta State softball team dropped its first Gulf South Conference series of the season with a 5-1 loss to the University of West Alabama Tigers in game three of the series on Feb. 19, 2017, at Livingston, Ala.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tigers struck first in the bottom of second inning. Chelsea Lobitos reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Allison Craft for the Tigers' first run of the game. Lobitos scored the second run on a passed ball.
  • Mari Alex Sandridge homered to centerfield in the top of the third to cut the Tigers' lead to 2-1.
  • West Alabama scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead 5-1. Savannah Smathers singled to score Ashley Smart for West Alabama's third run. Lobitos scored on a passed ball, and Smathers scored the final run of the game on an error.
  • Sandridge (1-1) suffered the loss in the circle. Sandridge pitched 3.1 innings, allowed five runs on four hits and struck out two. Taylor Tucker came on in relief of Sandridge in the bottom of the fourth. In 2.2 innings of work, Tucker sacrificed only one hit and recorded three strikeouts.  
  • Sandridge led Delta State at the plate, counting for the Lady Statesmen's sole run. Abi Gibson, Kory Watterson, and Pepper Baker each collected a hit.  
  • Andrea Edmonds (4-5) earned the win. She pitched the entire game, giving up one run on five hits, and striking out eight.
  • Craft, Smart and Smathers led the Tigers at the plate combining for four hits, two runs, and one RBI.
  
STAT OF THE DAY
  • Both Delta State and West Alabama tallied five hits on the day and left five runners on base.
  
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • This weekend's series marked the Gulf South Conference opener for both Delta State and West Alabama.
  • The Lady Statesmen are 9-16 against the Tigers under head coach Casey Charles' tenure.
  • Sandridge's recorded her second home run of the season and leads the team in home runs. She is currently riding a four-game hitting streak.
  • Gibson has reached base safely in all 14 contests and is riding a nine-game hitting streak. Gibson currently leads the Lady Statesmen offense with 19 hits, nine RBIs, and nine runs.  
 
UP NEXT
Delta State will travel to Cleveland, Tenn., for a Gulf South Conference weekend series against the Lee University Flames. The Lady Statesmen will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, Feb. 25, followed by a single game on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 1:00 p.m. (CST).
