Schmidt and Kilpatrick Lead Delta State Over CBU

CLEVELAND, Miss. - Seniors James Kilpatrick and Devin Schmidt combined for 37 points to help the Delta State University men's basketball team defeat Christian Brothers University, 69-67, on Saturday afternoon at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

How It Happened:
  • The Statesmen jumped out to an 8-4 advantage early in the first half with back-to-back John Cornish three-pointers and a James Kilpatrick layup at the first media timeout.
  • Christian Brothers would answer,going on a 6-2 run to tie it up 10-10 at the 13:30 mark.
  • The Statesmen responded with a Ravion Henry dunk sparked a 7-0 run to grab a comfortable 17-10 lead with 10:04 left in the first half.
  • Both squads were back-and-forth for the remainder of the half with Delta State holding its largest lead of the night, 33-23, as both teams went into the locker room.
  • Delta State shot 13-of-26 (50 percent) from the floor in the first half, including 4-for-10 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. The Statesmen were perfect from the charity stripe hitting all three free throw attempts. Kilpatrick led the Statesmen with 10 points and three rebounds, while Schmidt tallied eight points and Cornish tallied six. Henry (four points), Warner (three points) and Harper (two points) rounded out the DSU halftime scorers.
  • Christian Brothers went 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) from the field, including 5-for-14 (35.7 percent) from distance. The Bucs went 2-for-3 from the free throw line. Brad Miller led the way with eight points and four rebounds for CBU. Jeff Larkin and Adam Dieball chipped in five points each and a combined three rebounds.
  • Adam Dieball got the Bucs started from distance coming out the locker room to cut the gap to seven points.
  • After going back-and-forth, Christian Brothers closed the margin to three points after a Dieball layup with 13:23 left in the game.
  • At the 10:31 mark, PJ Davis hit back-to-back layups to bring the Statesmen back to a nine-point clearance.
  • The Statesmen and Bucs squared off for the majority of the last 10 minutes of the half as Delta State came out on top, 69-67, to claim the victory.
  • Delta State shot 25-for-53 for the game (47.2 percent), including going 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from three-point range. DSU went 13-of-16 (81.3 percent) at the free throw line for the game. Christian Brothers was 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) from the field and 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) from three point range, while going 4-of-5 at the free throw line. 
  • Schmidt had another standout night with 24 points and 11 rebounds for Delta State, while Kilpatrick added 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Henry added eight points, seven rebounds and one assist, and Davis and Warner tallied seven points each for the Statesmen.
  • Christian Brothers was led by Brad Miller, who had 16 points and seven rebound. Dieball and Joe Laravie added 14 points for the Bucs.

  • Schmidt recorded his fourth double-double of the season.
  • Both seniors combined for 37 of Delta States 69 points for the evening.
  • Delta State clinched a Super Tuesday home game in Gulf South Conference tournament with the win.
