Kneeland, Jackson and Rush Lead DSU Past Christian Brothers

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University women's basketball team got 21 combined points from seniors Kaelin Kneeland and Anissa Jackson in a late come-from-behind win to steal a 56-53 victory over Christian Brothers University in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday.

How It Happened:
  • The Lady Statesmen jumped out of the gate, nailing five of their first nine shots from the floor and seizing a 10-5 lead at the first media timeout. 
  • Delta State remained hot, as Alondrea Rush nailed a pair of three-pointers as DSU shot 50% from the floor after one quarter of play. 
  • DSU's defense held Christian Brothers scoreless for the final 3:58 of the first quarter. 
  • Alexis Ross scored a pair of baskets in the second quarter, and Kaelin Kneeland added six points including a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the free throw line. 
  • The Lady Statesmen led by as many as 16 in the first half, but secured a 30-18 edge at halftime.
  • Delta State shot 12-of-25 (48 percent) in the opening half, while CBU was just 7-of-17 (41.2 percent). Rush was 2-of-3 from three as she scored 10 points. Kneeland chipped in 10 points as well to go along with three assists. Samantha Reeves led the Lady Bucs with 11 points. 
  • Christian Brothers chipped away at the lead in the third, outscoring Delta State 17-9 in the third quarter behind six points from Reeves and four points from Courtney Banks to trail 39-35 heading to the final quarter. 
  • Delta State was 0-for-5 to close the third quarter and was held without a field goal over the final 3:08 by the Lady Bucs. 
  • A quick 9-0 run from the Lady Bucs put the visitors out to their largest lead of the game, 43-39, with 7:34 to play in the game. 
  • Anissa Jackson drilled a 17-foot jumper to pull DSU within one, 45-44, and then converted a transition layup off of a steal to give the Lady Statesmen the 46-45 lead. 
  • After a pair of free throws from CBU, Jackson snagged the lead back for the Green-and-White on another jumper as DSU led 48-47. 
  • Rush his a layup, a jumper and a pair of free throws over the final 1:39 to seal the win for the Lady Statesmen.
  • Delta State finished 22-of-51 (43 percent) from the floor, including just 2-for-10 (20 percent) from three-point territory. DSU went 10-of-14 from the free throw line. The Lady Bucs shot 18-of-38 (47 percent from the floor), made 13-of-21 from the free throw line and knocked down just 4-of-13 attempts from three. 
  • Rush led the way with 18 points for DSU, while Kneeland added 11 and Jackson added 10. Seniors Alexis Ross and Aspriona Gilbert each contributed five points as well. 
  • Samantha Reeves led the way for CBU, scoring 19 points. Banks added 18 for the visitors. 
 
Notables:            
  • Delta State forced four shot-clock violations as part of a swarming defensive attack. 
  • The Lady Statesmen seniors combined for 32 of Delta State's 56 points in the win. 
  • Anissa Jackson had a career-high six steals.
  • Craig Roden notched his 350th career GSC victory.
  • The game marked the 14th time this year DSu had at least three players in double-figures

Who's Next:
  • The Lady Statesmen hit the road for the final two games of the season, traveling to West Alabama and West Georgia. Delta State will play West Alabama on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in Livingston, Ala. Delta State will then close out the regular season in Carrollton, Ga. against the Wolves on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
