Lee University Sweeps Doubleheader From Delta State

CLEVELAND, Tennessee – The Delta State softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Lee University in its second Gulf South Conference series of the season on Feb. 25, 2017 at Cleveland, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The Lady Flames took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Courtney Crawford doubled to left center, scoring Stevie Baird. Abby McKinney scored the Lady Flames' second run on a fielding error, and Leigh Beatenbough grounded out to score Brooklynn Frazier for the third and final run of the inning.
  • The Lady Statesmen began to make a comeback in the top of the second. Abi Gibson reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, and Carah Nunez scored on the play to put Delta State on the board. Jordan Jones' two-RBI single tied the game 3-3.
  • Delta State took the lead in the top of the fourth when Gibson singled up the middle to score Chelsea Lamping.
  • The Lady Flames used a three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead.
  • A pair of RBI singles and a two-RBI double increased Lee's lead 10-5 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the top of the sixth, Jones doubled through the left side, plating Kara Lane Nowell for Delta State's sixth run and final run, cutting Lee's lead 10-6.
  • Delta State went through three pitchers in game one, but Taylor Johnson (1-4) was saddled with the loss. Johnson gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits, while striking out one in 4.1 innings of work. Johnson came in relief of starting pitcher Taylor Tucker in the bottom of the first. Tucker allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. Brittany Taylor closed out the game, coming in relief of Johnson. In 1.1 innings of work, Taylor allowed only one hit.
  • Beatenbough earned the win to improve to 5-3. In six innings of work, she allowed six runs on five hits, while striking out 10.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • In the bottom of the second, the Lady Flames used a two-out rally to take a 4-0 lead over Delta State. Annabeth Pruett's RBI double to center field plated Lee's first run of the game. Baird followed with a three-run home run to left field. Mari Alex Sandridge was called to relieve Bailie Springfield in the circle, and Crawford grounded out to finally end the inning.
  • In the top of the third, Nowell scored Delta State's first run of the game on a throwing error by the catcher. Nunez drew a bases loaded walk to cut Lee's lead 4-2. Madison Zoeller followed with an RBI single to plate Sandridge for Delta State's third run. With the bases still loaded, the Flames called Hailey Clark from the bullpen. But Kristen Mitchell walked, bringing home Kory Watterson for the tying run.
  • Delta State took the lead in the top of the fifth when Nowell doubled to left field, scoring Hannah Salmon for Delta State's fifth run of the game.
  • The Lady Statesmen held on to the one-run lead until the bottom of the seventh, when the Lady Flames made a comeback. Frazier's sac fly to center plated Kayla Louie for the tying run. Lee loaded the bases, and Bailey Church sealed the win with a grand slam.
  • Sandridge suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. In 5.0 innings of work, she gave up five runs, but only one earned, on four hits.
  • Taylor Moran earned the win in relief. In two innings, she gave up one hit and struck out two.
  • At the plate Jordan Jones went 3-for-8 on the day with three RBIs and a run scored. Carah Nunez was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run.  
 
STAT OF THE DAY 
  • Delta State drew a combined five walks compared to four for Lee.
 
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Jones' double in game one marks her seventh of the season. She leads the team in doubles and currently ranks third in the GSC in doubles.
  • Jones collected her second multi-RBI game of the season in game one.
  • Sandridge has reached base safely in the past six contests.
  • The Lady Statesmen have tallied 19 doubles, which ranks eighth in the GSC.
