Statesmen Travel to UWA, UWG for Regular Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Miss. -  The Delta State University men's basketball team secured another game at Walter Sillers after beating Christian Brothers University over the weekend, 69-67, ultimately clinching Super Tuesday on Feb. 28. This week, the Statesmen hit the road to wrap up the regular season against University of West Alabama on Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m., then head to the University of West Georgia on Feb. 25 at 3 p.m.

  • The Statesmen improved to 20-6 on the season, which is the first 20-win season since 2013-14 and maintained the third spot in the GSC table with a 15-5 record. The Statesmen have already clinched a GSC Tournament berth and with the win over CBU clinched a GSC quarterfinal home game on Feb. 28.
  • Last week, Delta State entered the first South Region poll at the No. 3 spot. Alabama Huntsville and Valdosta State occupied the first two spots in the rankings.
  • West Alabama are in the 11th spot in the GSC table with a 5-15 GSC record. The Tigers are led by a duo of scoring leaders with junior forward Gavin Robinson averaging 17.2 points per game and junior guard Jahmal Lane (13.9 ppg) all with double-digits this season. Earlier this season, the Statesmen snapped West Alabama's four-game win streak in the 57-54 victory at Walter Sillers. The Tigers currently boast a 5-6 record at Pruitt Hall.
  • West Georgia are still fighting for a GSC Tournament berth, but currently sit 10th in the GSC table with a 6-14 conference record with two games remaining in the season. The Wolves are led by Stephaun Branch, who is averaging 19.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Shannon Fowler (12.4 ppg) and Keron Briggs (11.5 ppg) round out the players with double-digits for UWG. West Georgia are currently on a four-game losing streak and post a 5-8 record at The Coliseum.
  • As a team, the Statesmen average 76 points per game, which ranks eighth in the conference. On the defensive side of the ball, Delta State is holding its opponents to an average 69.4 points per game to rank second in the GSC and 35th in Division II.
  • Senior guard Devin Schmidt is averaging 22.9 points per game which ranks second in the league and 4.7 assists per game to also rank second. Schmidt has scored 2,468 career points (20.9 ppg), is 43.2 percent (826-of-1910) from the floor and 36.3 percent from three-point range (294-of-811). He needs 102 points to become the GSC's all-time leading scorer. Schmidt recently moved into the third spot in the Mississippi all-time scoring list with his 21 points at Union on Feb. 16.
  • Sophomore Brett Warner continues to be clutch for the Statesmen, Warner has scored 20-plus points in three of the last five games and is averaging 18.6 points per game over that span.
