Schmidt, Warner Help Statesmen Torch Mississippi College

CLEVELAND, Miss. - Devin Schmidt and Brett Warner combined for 59 points to lead the Delta State University's men's basketball team in an 85-62 victory over in-state rival Mississippi College at Walter Sillers Coliseum on Monday night.

How It Happened:
  • The Statesmen got off to a fast start with an 11-2 run on big buckets from Devin Schmidt, Brett Warner and James Kilpatrick after trailing by two to start the game.
  • Mississippi College began to chip away at the lead in scoring seven straight points, but the Statesmen maintained a 23-17 lead at the 10-minute mark.
  • Delta State held the Choctaws without a point for nearly three minutes late in the opening half.
  • DSU closed out the half going on a 10-2 run with a 41-28 lead as both teams went into the locker room.
  • The Statesmen shot 16-of-31 (52 percent) in the first half, including 6-of-16 from three-point range. DSU was perfect from the charity stripe going 3-for-3.
  • Warner led all scorers with 18 first half points and two rebounds, while Schmidt tallied 15 and five rebounds. Harper (four points), Kilpatrick and Taylor (two points apiece) rounded out players to score for Delta State. 
  • The Choctaws went 12-of-25 (48 percent) from the floor and only shot 33 percent (1-for-3) from three-point land. MC was also 3-for-6 from the free throw line in the opening half.
  • Xavion Dillon led scorers with nine points for the half. Brandon Boston tallied six points while DeOndre Haynes and Antonio Johnson contributed four points apiece for the Choctaws.
  • Both offenses came out strong at the start of the second half, but a trio of Schmidt three-pointers extended the lead 62-42 with 13:22 left in the game.
  • Mississippi College wouldn't let up, scoring four quick points, but a Warner three and Henry layup put the game at 79-54 late in the first half.
  • Byron McCall and Dillon hit jumpers late in the half, but a pair of PJ Davis free throws sealed the 85-62 victory for the Statesmen.
  • Delta State shot 30-for-60 for the game (50 percent), including going 13-of-29 from long-range, including 7-of-13 in the second half. DSU went 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.
  • The Choctaws were 25-of-55 (46 percent) from the field and only 2-of-9 (22 percent) from beyond the arc and made just 10-of-18 from the charity stripe.
  • Schmidt tallied 30 points, seven rebounds and nine assists to lead the way for DSU. Warner followed with 29 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kilpatrick (nine points) and Harper (seven points),  rounded out the other players that attributed to major points.
  • Dillon and Boston led the Choctaws with 13 points, while Johnson chipped in 11 points and Mack attributed 10 points and nine rebounds. 

Notables:          
  • The Statesmen's 13 three-pointers tied for the most threes against a Gulf South Conference opponent.

  • The Statesmen continue the five-game home stand at Walter Sillers over the next week. DSU is scheduled to face Lee University on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
