Wolves Sweep Doubleheader From Lady Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Comeback efforts late in the game fall short, as the Delta State softball team dropped both games to the University of West Georgia on Sunday, March 12, at University Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off a double steal.
  • The Lady Statesmen held the Wolves to a one-run lead until the top of the third, when the Wolves plated two more runs to increase their lead, 3-0.
  • Delta State tried to make a comeback, but the Wolves held the Lady Statesmen offense scoreless for nearly the entire game.
  • In the top of the seventh, Wallace's RBI single and Stallworth's two-run home run to put the Wolves up 6-0.
  •  The Lady Statesmen began to make a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when Kristen Mitchell singled, scoring Hannah Smith for Delta State's first run of the game. Shelby Newsom followed with a two-run bomb to left field, cutting the Wolves' lead to 6-3. With two outs, Mari Alex Sandridge singled up the middle to load the bases, but Kory Watterson lined out to end the game. 
  • A pair of RBI singles in the top of the first gave Union a 2-0 lead over Delta State.
  • Starting pitcher Mari Alex Sandridge (2-3) suffered the loss. Sandridge gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits. In 3.0 innings of relief, Taylor Tucker allowed three runs, all earned, on three hits.
  • Lindseye Jefferson (4-2) earned the win. In 6.1 innings of work, she allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits. Danielle Easterly earned the save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 2
  • Marley Stowers homered to left center to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • In the bottom of the first, Jordan Jones scored on a passed ball to level the score. Mari Alex Sandridge scored on a groundout, and Delta State headed to the top of the second with a 2-1 lead.
  • Miles' RBI single in the top of the second tied the game 2-2. Then Katie Spinks scored on an error, putting the Wolves back on top, 3-2.
  • The Wolves held the Lady Statesmen to a one-run deficit, until the bottom of the sixth when Carah Nunez's solo shot to right center tied the game, 3-3.
  • With the score still tied 3-3 after seven innings, the game proceeded to extra innings.
  • With one out, the Lady Statesmen managed to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but a pop-up and fly-out ended the inning.
  • In the top of the ninth inning, the Wolves found the breakthrough. Stowers scored the game-winning run off an RBI single by Regan Smith.
  • Bailie Springfield suffered her first loss of the season in the circle. In nine innings of work, she gave up four runs, three earned, on nine hits.
  • Adriana Durden earned the win, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits in nine innings of work.    
 
STAT OF THE DAY
  • Delta State tallied 16 hits on the day, while UWG tallied 17.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Newsom's home run in game one was the first of her career. She also recorded her first multi-RBI game.  
  • Nunez's solo shot in the game two was her first home run of the season.
  • Sandridge has reached base safely in the past 18 contests.
  • Jones' four hits in game two are a game-high this season. She is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak.
  • The Lady Statesmen took a total 34 at bats in game two—the second highest at bats for a single game this season.
  • Delta State's 16 assists in game two are a season-high.
  • The Lady Statesmen were just three shy of setting a new season-high in putouts with 27 in the second game.
